Something that Ford and Liverpool University have been working on. Replacing spark plugs with laser fired ignition. A cleaner, more controlled burn of the air/fuel mixture will mean that less fuel can be used without risk of detonation. Thus improving economy and performance.

Perhaps we can keep our V8's after all... Woohoo!!!

Just read on another site that Ford are looking to introduce this in their high end cars as early as 2011.

Totally agree...

Anything the manufacturers can do to already improve current engine technology is a bonus.

There was me worrying about the demise of the V8 engine... when a technology such as this can ensure that muscle bound V8's remain with us just that little bit longer... Superb!

If you take one out at the roadside, and point it at a traffic warden, will she melt...?

I didnt think Ford had been particularly innovative in the past (with a couple of notable exceptions - mass production and the Sierra spring to mind)

I'm ready to be corrected though!

That's why they have scrap yards, so you don't have to pay 9.37 GBP for a number plate lamp titchy plactic lens....

The Cortina?

In fact... the first Transit? Much as what Top Gear says is frequnetly as touch off, the Transit really did break the stranglehold of the haulage companies, and they were ridiculously fast for their day.

I was going to tell you that was not true. But it is, so i won't. (just wiki'd it and was massivly surprised to find out your very much correct in a general term. Fergerson P99 (race car) and Jenson FF where first but not a general release.)

Thankyou for enlightening me, one for the pub quiz i think.

believe it was the last shape of the Granadas prior to the horrible Scorpio

I believe in 1971 Ford released the first fleet of cars fitted with working airbags. I know they go back to the 50s but these were the first real first gen airbags as we know

Anti-lock braking systems were first developed for aircraft. An early system was Dunlop's Maxaret system, introduced in the 1950s and still in use on some aircraft models. This was a fully mechanical system. It saw limited automobile use in the 1960s in the Ferguson P99 racing car, the Jensen FF and the experimental all wheel drive Ford Zodiac, but saw no further use; the system proved expensive and, in automobile use, somewhat unreliable. The first car (worldwide) to have ABS fitted as standard (across the entire range) was the Ford Granada Mk 3 (of 1985).
