Has anyone heard or tried using the Getrag v160/v161 gearbox from the Supra? I've read in the forum that it can handled high hp/tq right out of the box without mods. Is this true? If so, it's a good deal being most I've seen for sale are below 3k USD (used).

800lbs/ft of torque, why?
No disrespect but have you ever owned/driven a car with even 400lbs/ft?
And then there is the fact that we are talking about an Ultima with an extreme amount of power.
I appreciate this was not your original question but you really need to get out in the type of car that you intend to build and I think that as a result you may well come away from the experience with a slightly different remit yes

To answer your query, no, there is no such thing as an inexpensive trans axle that will handle that type of power.

Yes I have ridden in an GTR with 400+ lb feet of torque and it didn't scare me at all. So I thought 800 would do the trick. I won't be building one but buying an used one. Just thought owners here might have some ideas on gearboxes that handle this amount of torque. And as for pricey, how expensive are we talking here? 20k USD?

I am not suggesting that you may get scared, what I am saying is that is it an absolute necessity that you have a car with such a large amount of power?
The problem is big torque tends to break stuff ie. clutches. drive shafts, output flanges and trans axles to name but a few and with the Ultima being a bit of a feather weight big torque is not really the way to go, all of this is only in my own humble opinion you understand wink
The GTW is a fine tool but I have asked myself on many an occasion if 650bhp was really necessary and I have to say the answer is no, 500bhp, and I mean a genuine 500bhp mind, would have been more than adequate for the job and a darn sight cheaper too yes
I just missed the boat with regards to an LS7 motor but if I had my time again I would not have hesitated and been more than happy with the standard 505bhp, and all the reliability and economy that comes with that package.
On the other hand I do understand what it is like to have an itch and indeed the only way to get rid of it is going to be to scratch the sucker but we have a saying in these parts; It is a fine line between scratching your arse and tearing it apart.
Oh yeah, 20kUSD should do the trick biggrin

^^^ Hello Clive, how is it going?
As you well know I am a big fan of trick parts and it certainly seems that you are amassing a 'GTWayne' like pile of goodies there but tell me, do you actually intend using any of them for anything, ever? wink

What about a Holinger box?
http://www.holinger.com.au/product_page.php?comman...
or a Ricardo box. If it can handle the torque of the Bugatti Veyron, can cope with Ultima type power imo

The gearbox that Grasser Racing is offering sounds good and the price appears very reasonable.

Talking of gearboxes. Does any one on here use the Hewland NLT in their Ultima's?

I am sure it is a very good gearbox, but at £18 - £20 k depending on the casing, it's beyond my budget.
