Have a look at the "Labs" section of www.pcpro.co.uk - they tested quite a few DVD writers a couple of months ago.
Pioneer have the firmware to deal with scratches etc.
Installed one for a mate last night astounding bit of kit.
Copied a DVD wholesale and then converted a Divx film to DVD and it worked perfectly.
In fact so well I bought one for myself this morning.
Highly recommended for £80 odd...

The Pioneer drivers are highly recommended. A06 is the retail (boxed) drive and the 106 is the OEM, brown envelope jobbie.
Try www.svp.co.uk for some good prices, and very good service. They specialise in blank discs and drives. I have no affiliation with them other than being a satisfied customer.

The best DVD writer out there at the moment is the Plextor 708A 8x DVD-+RW. Awesome drive that does everything. Anything Plextor is THE best but you pay for it... $200US. The new 8x Lite-On is excellent as well... pretty much on par with the Plextor but for only $150US. At work we have the 4x Memorex which we got for ~$100US and it is decent. Don't know if I would buy another. We just bought a 4x TDK 440n for $130US and that is a nice drive. Pioneers are OK as well but I have had quality issues with every Pioneer drive I have ever purchased so I stay away now.
