Taken last night... works well as a background... thought I'd share as I know there are quite a few that use that res here (also because at 750 wide it looks RUBBISH).

By the way... and O/T, my old local, The Kirkstile Inn - Loweswater, Lake District (which have their own brewery - HIGHLY recommended) Have used my photos on the pumps and bottles of two new ales: Loweswater Gold and Buttermere Beauty. I just got an e mail from the boss wondering if I'd like some samples...

....er... what is it they say about bears and woods?

Anyway, next time you lot are up there, it's a blimmin' great Inn... surrounded IMHO by some of the best/most photogenic scenery in England.

Thanks, I feel a little better now knowing you make the same errors the rest of us do from time to time.

Whilst my adopted country is generally a barren wasteland in terms of beer, the microbreweries are really thriving (if in upsatte NY do try the Gilded Otter in new Paltz, super beer and decent pub food).

Random USA beer research
In terms of scary statistics I have found out, beer consumption in the USA is in the order of 50,000,000,000 pints per year which approximates to 1 pint per day (except Sundays) for every adult over the age of 21. Now exclude the Bible belt and the Mormons and someone's doing a lot of drinking.

Market dominance, total US beer consumption is dominated by 3 companies having a total of 82% of all beer sales, Anheuser-Busch have approx 52% market share, Miller 19% and Coors 11%. I know there have been corpoarte mergers and acquisitions since this data was pulled, but it shows a scary dominance by a few companies

There's a question!

Nikon D3 - speed priority, 640 ISO, 70mm, f11 @ 250th. But I bracketed 5 frames and in PP manually selected the buildings from a shot 1.4 stops distant, and pasted them onto the photo (as they were going to be hopelessly underexposed). HDR without the artifacts! I then selected and softened the sky and sharpened the buildings.... and cloned out a second boat that annoyed me.

ETA... now I've said all that the buildings look too bright... but they don't if you don't know (If you see what I mean).

Thanks Steve. Being a compulsive sort, I've just had delivered 2x 22" 1920x1080 LCD monitors, so I'm in the market for a background for them!

Chris - interesting stats about US beer drinking. Isn't most US beer weak as gnats piss though?

I brew my own, mmmmm homebrew.

Good wheeze. I can't bracket when I shoot as it's all people, and they move, but I often double process the RAW file and combine the best part of each in PS, either with the eraser if simple, or a layer mask if complex.

I had a hunch that the pink bit right in the middle of the sunset might have been burnt white and you painted it in pink, but now I'll demur!

You're right, in general it's awful. Based on published info (a year or two out of date) I calculated last night that 41 billion pints of Bud, Miller and Coors are downed by drinkers each year here. All is not lost as microbreweries have grown very well over the last 10 years but in general it's still difficult to get a nice brew unless you're in the know.
