We're off on a cruise at the end of July (Norwegian Fjords, Iceland and Ireland) and my missus is beginning to wonder what clothes to pack. I've said, same as an English summer holiday (bit of everything) but having never been to Norway or Iceland before I guess I could be wrong. Any thoughts?

I lived in Norway for years, and the answer is how long are you going for, if more than 5 minutes then even in August you will need, wet weather gear, cold weather clothes and a swim trunks.
Going on a cruise in the Fjord is enjoyable dispite the weather nt because of it.

On a related question - I think I'm going to Oslo for a couple of days early August, I'll bare in mind the wet weather advice, didn't think I would have had to worry about that!

Anything of note worth visiting around Oslo (or within easy public transport... distance)?

It's supposed to be stinking hot next week, it's rained the past few days.

Go and see Munch's Scream, that's free. Viking ship museum is good for half an hour but a bit pricey for what it is. There is a good free design gallery near Grunnerlokka that is free too.

For a cheapskate afternoon, start at the new Opera House and climb onto the roof, have a pint/coffee on Aker Bruge, wander up Karl Johans gate and have a pint/coffee on the roof of the Grand Hotel. Walk upto the castle, make the guards laugh and have a potter upto the statue park, having bought some packed lunch on the way.

Holmenkollen ski jump is in the process of being rebuilt now which is a shame, have fun !

Weather in Oslo is more reliable than the west cost and Iceland, as I said in an earlier post, the weather can change at any time there, you don't go to Norway for the weather, or if you are the sort who lets the weather ruin the holiday, I agree on things to see in Oslo, and would add Andersens South Pole ship the Fran to the list og things to see. Biggest problem in Oslo is cost.

We were in Norway last July and it was scorching! Was glad we had taken some "Summer" clothing as well as the waterproofs.

Oslo in August will probably be hot, things to do

Fram Museum, Viking Museum, Kontiki Museum and the Folk Museum, all on the Bygdoy (spelling?)Peninsula on the outskirts of the city, you can get a bus there or more pleasant is a boat from near Akerbrygge.

Akerbrygge for a few drinks/meal and to enjoy the nice Norwegian ladies walking by in their summer clothes.

Oslo is a nice city but as said before is expensive.

Grunnerlokka is a nice part of town for having a potter in the (reasonable) shops and junk shops. The missus loves to have a coffee and people watch.

There is a fantastic tapas restruant called 'Delicatessen'. Problem is everyone knows about it, turn up and get your name on the waiting list, we had to wait for an hour last night. If it gets too long, Sud Ost down the street is a worthwhile alternative. Reckon on £100 for two with tips and a couple of drinks.

All the restruants in the City centre are a bit touristy and poor as they don't rely on repeat custom.

If you want to push the boat out there Is a fish restrauant 'Fjord', can't say I've been though it's supposed to be top drawer !

Well, came back from our Oslo weekend. Weather was a bit mixed unfortunately, 50/50 sunny/wet.

Did visit quite a variety of places which we found interesting so a successful trip. Flights were from Ryanair, managed to get a couple of tickets for the grand total of just over 4 quid - drawback being the nearly 2 hour bus ride/train trip to Oslo though!

Wish it had been less wet though. Luckily was quite sunny when visited the Vigeland sculpture park and the opera house. (I think the sculpture park was my highlight of visit). The Kon Tiki and Fram museums were also quite interesting.

Definitely a bit pricey over there but did find a few reasonable places to eat that weren't too expensive but still tasty. Was about 6-7 quid for house wine/near pint of beer.

We stopped at half a dozen fjords the week before last and the weather was, in the end, fantastic. In fact I got rather sunburned!

Glad you enjoyed it. Out of interest what cruise company did you use, and would you recommend them?

We went with Princess - and yes we'd recommend them (the kids enjoy the kids clubs and it's not overly formal). There were quite a few 'coffin dodgers' on the cruise though. Also, make sure you have a room with a balcony.

Thanks, My Mum would love to go to the Fjords, She's not got any sea legs, but enjoyed the Nile cruise we did this year. It would be great to do the Fjords again. Fantastic scenery.
