Nitrons - Are they worth the money?
Discussion
From past debate, you can get better performing adjustable shocks than standard no-adjustable TVR shocks for less money. Don't bother with the standard items.
I didn't pick up a pattern in last thread for or against particular budget shocks. Nitrons however have got a thumbs up from all who've bought them. Pays your money and takes your choice I guess.
Steve.

Steve.
I'm getting Nitrons fitted to the Cerb at this very moment, but my original shocks were completely shot so anything would be better.
If you need to replace the shocks anyway, then a set of Nitrons aren't much more expensive than the standard TVR bits. Topcats seemed to believe that the Nitrons were worth the extra.

Tony,
I'm in a similar position and am contemplating getting Nitrons for the Cerbie (I previously had them on the Griff). However, I saw an advert on here the other day for a suspension specialist who uses modified Ledas. On the web site there are a number of case studies, one of which was for a trackday/sprint Griff who had replaced Nitrons with these stocks to good effect (more compliant handling apparently).
Worth considering those also (once I've found the link)?

edited to add: Found it - www.al-engineering.co.uk/studies.htm#griffith. I've haven't used them personally and have no idea how it'd compare to a Nitron setup (the cost is pretty much identical).

Dampers vary so much and make such a difference to the handling and feel of the car that I think you should buy the best you can afford. In my case that means Nitrons, which are significantly more expensive than budget dampers but also work dramatically better than the alternatives I've tried from Koni, Spax, AVO and Gaz.
Spend the money with an expert fitter - AVO do good shocks, half the price of Nitrons. I have Nitrons, but to date they have not been set up properly (two attempts!) - they will be going into Austech racing for alignment, corner weighting and setup.
Consider how many variables there are to configure, then try and match it with your requirments, then try to convey this to the fitter.
Probably worth it, but only if setup properly

Ive spoken to Warren at Topcats and he says that Nitrons would be superb for the car and as has already been pointed out, dont cost much more than the standard TVR bits.
Did he tell you that he had a Cerb in at the moment having some fitted? Maybe we could have got a bulk discount!
Hi Tony, I had a similar dilema earlier in the year on my Griff. It was finally decided by the fact that Nitrons were cheaper than TVR, noone else could supply all four corners (inc people like AVO) at the time and the Nitrons come with springs. Most aftermarket kit comes only as dampers. If springs are required as well (which you might not find out until you start the job) then that will bring the prices almost upto Nitron's anyway.
I decided Nitrons due to cost (against TVR), availability (against eveyone) and the fact I got new springs as I suspected my '92 springs would be near replacement anyway.
I am happy with the results.

Ian,
My sentiments exactly.

I bought a set of Gaz shocks from Tower View last year, and they were about £1k by the time they were fitted, and I have had problems with the front shocks bushes splitting (which has been rectified f.o.c by Tower view :-) )
A few Griff owners have been out with me on track days, and most of their first comments after getting out of the car, has been.....this is not standard suspension..is it????
Read into that as you will, BUT I took it as a compliment on the cars handling.
My gut feeling is that what ever the shock is, once you have got the set up right, it will feel a million $ whatever the manufacturer.
Oh and make sure you get the modified wishbones, to add some - camber, it transforms the car!!!

Same question going through my mine Tony ![]()
Joolz where are you ?
I know Guy likes to have a level playing field for his dampers, and although the price isn't fixed at 850 plus vat I'd be surprised if he would like anyone selling them to undercut any of his established retailers, however having said that I'll give him a call and see what he says..
