Does anyone know if an auto box and / or engine from an L reg Renault Safrane 2.9V6 RXE would be a straight swap into an L reg Espace RT 2.9V6 Auto ?

Help much appreciated.

Cheers,

Robert

Hi Jap-car
The Safrane engine will fit your Espace ok but not the auto box. The Safrane uses an AD8 which is transverse fit where the Espace is an AR unit which is fitted in line.

Thanks my350i - info much appreciated. You don't happen to know if the Ren 25 box would fit do you? ie is it longitudinal?

Thanks and regards,

Robert.

Hi jap-car
The R25 is longitudnal (sp 2 much vino last night)and should fit ok. Ratios are different but should not present a problem. All the A-type boxes are crap though, unless you ned auto then would manual conversion not be a better option ?

Thanks my350i. very useful information. I have come to realise that the auto-box is a weakness - I'll never buy French again.

I haven't considered a manual conversion. Is this easy? I would have thought that there would be loads of ancillary stuff to change out?

Cheers,

Robert.

We replace Renault auto boxes on a very regular basis and I would never consider buying one, even the new ones are grief.
The manual conversion on the Espace is not too much problem especially if you can find an old one to obtain parts.

Superb - you know your Renaults - what's your job?

So if I were to replace the box on the above Espace, what are my options for donor cars (auto and manual). Similarly if I discover I need a new head (hopefully just the gasket) are there cars with the same head also? From what I have discovered so far, I think the Ren 25 is my best option as a cheap donor.

Much appreciated,

Robert.

My job?

If i tell you then i'll have to kill you

I,m an RTE (renault technical expert) in a dealer in se london. I do all the diagnosis and fault finding plus loads of other crap, done it now for around 25 years, reckon i deserve a medal or something!!!
Either find a 25 v6, turbo maybe would be fun, or a bent espace would be easiest.
Cheers

Thank you again. Can I just clarify my options with you? I really appreciate the information.

A bent Espace would be easiest but the breakers seem to want mega-bucks for the parts. I'm hoping to find a Ren 25 donor. There seem to be a number of Ren25 V6. The obvious one is the Baccara (2849cc which is the same as the Espace). There is also a 2664cc and a 2458cc+turbo versions.

Would a box from any version suffice?

Would an engine from any version suffice?

If just replacing a cylinder head, which would be suitable.

Oh and given the option between death and looking at my Espace, it's a close run choice

My dad has a 25 auto, despite my tellng him not to buy it. Ironically, everything I read said that the box was OK, it was the electronics that packs up. In his case the electronics were fine, the box failed. Twice.

A decade ago I had a 25 GTX (the 2.2 and IMHO the best engine option for the 25), hankered after a V6 but now they're too long in the tooth for my liking... although there are two cars locally that are owned by retired guys who only ever seem to take their wives 500 yards to the shops. Both are garaged and immaculate (the cars, not the wives ).

From memory there were so many combinations of driveshaft length, coupling and splines, plus brakes, that you'd hardly ever find the right bits in a breakers. When I needed a driveshaft, I went to the motor factors with the old one, and they STILL got me the wrong replacement...

On my GTX, there was an intermittent fault that killed the speedo, fuel computer and the cruise (I pulled the cruise out of a scrapped V6). After several forays behind the dash, I eventually resoldered the entire instrument electrics and the problem never recurred in my ownership.
I sold the car to a guy from Carlisle: a month later the Police turned up demanding satisfaction: apparently the car was involved in 'a serious incident' in Penrith, so I was more than happy to grass up the twat, who obviously hadn't registered it in his name...
I've always though it odd that he came 120 miles to buy a car that at the time was as common as muck...
Otherwise fond memories; it was the car I first got to honk across France in: a job for which it was eminently suited... a 3-piece suite on wheels.
Fancied an Espace on and off, but never found one at the right price (or in the right condition - god there are some sheds out there!).

Go for the Baccara or any late 25 v6, the 2664cc Z7V engine uses Bosch k-jetronic injection, not suited to Espace wiring and control systems. All the later versions of v6 used the Z7W engine with Renix electronic injection. Gearbox can come from any of the v6 versions, go for the 2.9 if possible though, but head will need to be Z7W 2.9. Power steering pump, alternator and air con units and mounting brackets are different but should swap over without problems.

wedg1e and my350i thanks for your replies. Both appreciated.

Wedg1e, if you still fancy an Espace, I can do you a great looking one at a very low price. It would make a very stylish shed and the polycarboante body never needs creosoting
