Z4M or SLK 55 AMG
Discussion
I think I know which one I want, but the MB forum area is rather quiet to say the least.
I have driven the Z4M roadster and coupe so far, very much preferred the coupe.
But for an extra couple of thousand over your current 56 plate Z4M coupe kind of prices
I can get my hands on an SLK 55 on a 55 plate, all the extras except parking sensors.
Running costs aren't an issue as it will be a second car. SLK is £20 a year cheaper insurance, and road tax is cheaper until 2010. So, a negligible difference and insignificant compared to the price of the vehicles anyway. MPG is about the same overall.
The S54 sounds sublime and is a great motor. The V8 SLK sounds fantastic too, I will be having a drive of one tomorrow.
Not much in it in terms of HP, but the SLK has 100lbft advantage...
What is the general consensus on these two? Which would you choose?

I have always felt that neither car has a great image. The SLK even in AMG for is not a true sports car, yes its fast and sounds great but is no sportscar. The SL 55 AMG likewise is an amazing car but Mercs are always too heavy and hard to control on the edge or at much more than 8/10th.
The Z4's are great cars, not sure that a roadster is any better to own than an SLK AMG, but won't get the strange looks.
How do you tend to drive, what do you want from a second sportscar, is image important and what about touring abilities, storage, accessories and running costs?

Having considered and driven both...I think you'll go for the 55.
If you can get over the image 'ladies car' you'll fall in the love with the noise and the great roof. Only reason I didn't get the 55 was the seller pulled out and I couldn't find one for the same sort of money.
Still love the Z4MC that I have. It's fantastic so you wouldn't be disappointed with that.
It's my 8th car in 5 years and think it's been the best.

When buying late last year I was looking for alternatives to the Z4m (coupe only for me as an ex breadvan owner) the SLK was a serious contender, however it doesn't drive nearly as well as the Z4MC, it's great to cruise (high speed)and it's not a bad looking car (ignoring predictable hairdresser comments) but it's typical of the AMG cars of that time, in that speed and power is plentiful but depth of feeling and handling are not as tight or feelsome as comparables (cayman or boxster chassis outdoes both Z4m and SLK AMG).
Not a bad car at all; drive it, try and find a typical road/situation you enjoy driving and see how it feels to you...

Well the one I went to see today is fitted with the performance pack, which gives uprated suspension and wheels amongst a few other things. Granted the steering feel is not up there with the Z4M but I enjoyed the test drive nonetheless. I've wanted a V8 for a while too. Anyway, the car was a good example, with a great spec. Put a deposit down and should pick it up next weekend if all goes to plan.
As for how I drive, I am not a 10/10ths driver so the AMG works for me. It will be a nice change after a series of BMWs over the past few years and I am very much looking forward to the it.
It won't be a day to day car for me. Well, it probably will for the next few weeks, but I have a diesel for the daily commute.

I've had both cars. You wouldn't be disappointed whichever one you chose. 2 great cars!
I put the SL65 AMG wheels on mine along with some KW coilovers. Dramatically improved the handling and the wheels really set the car off nicely.......although by no means cheap at just under 4K with tyres.
