The OH and myself are looking for somewhere to holiday in October.
The idea for two weeks away, doing pretty much noting.
Site-seeing etc is not a big must, but something close enough by, so that if we want to, we can.
Hot, relaxed, and not rammed full of people sounds perfect.
She'll be happy snorkling away in some clear waters, while im on the beach getting a jolly good tan...im sure you get the idea.

We were thinking of Sri Lanka, its a place neither of us have been before, its is far enough away in October that it should be hot.
But after an evenings research on the 'net, It doesn't look all that nice, or am i looking in the wrong places?
Budget...not as large as some of you im sure, but we've got a fair amount.

Any ideas??

Thanks.

Definitely not for you. Go to the holidays/travel forum and you might find better answers there.

Went to Sri Lanka a couple of years ago and although we loved it I'm not sure it's what you're after. It is a really nice country, but still largely undeveloped. Outside the hotel you'd ideally need a guide to keep the hordes of locals from pestering you. Snorkelling wise, the resort we were in at least you were advised not to swim in the sea (we did anyway) due to strong currants. There are probably much better suited options- Maldives, Sharm El Sheikh?

Thanks for the replies, i too am beggining to think that Sri Lanka is not ideal for us.
Sharm El Sheikh is a no-go, we have both been before, and not keen to go again.
Maldives sounds perfect for what we are after, but unless i am looking in the wrong places, its well over our budget?

Youd didn't mention a budget but I would recommend Mount Lavinia You can book directly with the Hotel. 14 nights will be around £600 for two. Plenty to do as it's very close to Colombo.

Mt Lavinia!!! Went there as a schoolboy on a rugby tour in 1978. I hope it has had a makeover. Being on the shore of a roaring ocean the weather really had taken it's toll. Decent enough back then though. Close to Columbo yes but there is still not much about there except shopping. Galle is nice, Kandy is fantastic, Sigiria Rock is spectacular and trincomalee ain't bad if its a beach holiday you want but my view (after many holidays there in recent years) is to consider, very seriously, going to Thailand. Lots of choice, very cheap, can laze about on delightful beaches, snorkel to you hearts content and eat like a king for bugger all.

See here for a perfect, romantic location (bit pricey but if too much work your way down!)

Stayed at Mount Lavinia Xmas and New Year 07/8 - thoroughly enjoyed it and would go again - unusual for me - I'm quite picky. Yes it wasn't perfect but service was good, food excellent and a very relaxing time was had by all 4 of us, and for what we paid good value for money.

Have a look at Indonesia and Bali - it covered all the bases for me and everyone was extremely friendly.

Went to Sri Lanka last October, was okay but takes too long to get anywhere interesting and the beaches are terrible for snorkelling after the tsunami.

Yeah as above, snorkelling is a no no! Sea's were too rough when we were there a few years ago. Site seeing was ok, went to the national park and spent 3 days holding on for dear life in a mini bus. One of those places that I can say I've been to but won't be going back!

Indonesia and Bali had been suggested by the OH, but i was warned that they are just bloody humid, not hot.
I did have a quick search, for the above, and couldn't find anything AI??
