I played and completed the original Half-Life back when it originaly came out. Got half-life 2 just after it came out and got stuck/bored about half way through.
A few months ago I saw The Orange Box for the 360 in game really cheap so thought Ide get it just for the sake of it.
Awsome game! Got completly into it and couldnt put it down. Played through episodes 1 and 2 aswell. Cant wait for episode 3 either.
The little mini game, Portal, in The Orange Box is fantastic aswell. Very clever.

Meh.
I loved the first but HL2 left me a little bored and the story got on my nerves a little as I didn't really know what was going on.
I also bought the Ornge box and was even more dissapointed.
Strange as the Half Life is one of my favourite games ever.
I have to say I agree. I found HL2 and the subsequent chapters boring and derivative. Yet HL1 was simply brilliant. I loved the first but HL2 left me a little bored and the story got on my nerves a little as I didn't really know what was going on.

HL2, for me, suffered from being a game designed to show off the features of the engine rather than a game designed to offer an intriguing story and clever level design. The physics puzzles were just banal IMO, which is odd given how great they were in Portal.
I play a bit too much Cs Source but havent picked up the HL2 since completing it when first launched.
My problem was i over complicated simple tasks like climbing up to get to a ladder. i would spend 30 minutes getting up a ladder that was never intended to be in the game and getting through a window to nowwhere then finding a bit down the ally another obvious laddder behind a box....
LOL
But Cs Source is still very good imo

derivative.

Derived from what?
The action bits were actually boring - same enemies over and over, the same limited arsenal, physics puzzles that were just tedious - use barrels to add weight to counter balance, or collapse a structure. There was also limited opportunity for exploration - why go to the effort of trying to create the impression of a living and breathing city and then put the game on rails.
I can understand why people liked it, but for me it was a style over content exercise.
