My rear derailleur needs adjustement - anyone got a link for a set up guide? I can't seem to find what I need having looked on Bike Radar etc.

Problem is;

I have an additional down shift once the chain is on the smallest cog, the chain reaches onto the biggest cog but jumps one in the middle somewhere and will not stay on the cog (when on one of the mid cogs)

Any help much appreciated.

Sounds like cable tension. Try tightening the cable a little using the tension adjuster at the lever- this may fix the problem without actually having to adjust the derailleur

If the chain reaches the largest sprocket without jumping off into the spokes and it also reaches the smallest sprocket without jumping off into the gap between the frame and the smallest sprocket then no derailleur adjustment is necessary.

Like the other person said, it will probably be a cable tension issue. If you can't get enough tension in the cable using the barrel adjusters on the gear lever and at the derailleur end then you may have to unfasten the cable from the mech and pull more cable through. Then you can fine tune the tension using the barrel adjusters.

the park tools website is generally my first port of call for tuning techniques.

Thanks for the advice, it seems so easy. I will give it a go.

Another possibility if the problem is only occuring as you change down to the smaller cogs is that the cable is sticking in the outer sheath due to corrosion or mud clogging it up.

Thread resurrection time!

XT rear derailleur on a ten-ratio cassette.

All ok except I can't shift to the second smallest gear, the smallest, third smallest are fine as are all the others.

Cable tension/lubrication?

That is usually a sticky cable. For the cost of them I generally just put a new one on.
