OK. So clever clogs me opens a Halifax EasyCash account to obtain an Electron card to avoid the rip-off transaction charges on LyanAir.

I book a return flight, choose Visa Electron from the drop-down menu and complete the transaction.

Browser whirrs away. Nothing happens. Error message comes up something like "We are having trouble with our web site. Please log in and select 'Manage Your Flight'.

This I do. All the flight details are there with reservation number. But in BIG RED LETTERS letters it says 'PAYMENT DECLINED".

I call Halifax. There is no restriction on my Electron card. There are funds in the account. And .... There is NO record of LyanAir ever putting the transaction through.

Think about it. A payment has been declined for a payment request that has never been submitted.

So. What do we conclude? That LyanAir knows people are trying to get Electron cards to avoid transaction charges but it legally can't refuse to say it accepts the card. Instead it progammes its web site to reject Electron cards with spurious error messages.

Well done Mick. I hope your rip-cord fails on your next jump.

I've been using entropay to pay for my last couple of ryanair flights - it provides a virtual credit card which they charge you a small amount of % to pre-load money on.

Managed to score a couple of cheap holidays doing it that way (~5quid including tax with no web checkin fees and certainly no bloody card fees).

"If it looks too good to be true, it probably is."

Nothing surprises me with RyanScare anymore, so I steer well clear of them. No problems so far with QueasyJet though...

Just tried that. Applied for the entropay, loaded it, and went back onto bdO'LearyAir's site. Used the Visa Electron pull down (any other option incurs the charge). Same thing. Wouldn't process it.

I HATE THEM

(yes I know... vote with your feet. But the people I'm travelling with live in Essex near Stansted and won't use SleazyJet from Luton)

Fly separately, or put up with the charges and the (complete) lack of any sort of service from the ground- and cabin crew. Or persuade fellow travellers that RyanAir really aren't worth the hassle, thank-you very much.

Yes - I know it's a bad bus service and the anti-Christ of customer service. I know I shouldn't fly with them. And usually I would rather roller skate to the destination than use them. But it's a bit difficult to fly separately when the Sleazy and LyinAir airports are 120 miles apart and we've hired one car. But thanks for your input.

My last Ryanair flights I booked and paid with an Electron card. Same with Easyjet. No issues at all.

I fly sleazy & lyanair several times a year for work, tbh not really had to much trouble with either - you get what you pay for, and the Irish transporter gives me a heapload more legroom than Stelios' buses. Sleazy applied a ridiculous baggage charge in one instance which I decided not to sort at the time due to the fact, oh, the plane was leaving in 30mins(!) but to be fair they've given me a credit for the full amount against future flights so no real cost to me. Just wanted to add a little balance to the usual slagging the airlines get - they are still much cheaper than other airlines flying the same routes but just offer no thrills which is fine for <2 hour flights and keeps business costs low

Electron and Entropay payment with no fees declined. Bank confirmed they never received a payment request. Visa credit card transaction with £9 fee went through successfully in an instant. Go figure.

I see the utter s are now charging for online check-in, where before they were only charging for check-in at the airport. So as you have no choice surely it should be in the cost of the tickets. madmad

I will fly with them no more. In fact, I booked a trip to Barcelona with BA, and they were cheaper than the (so-called) low-cost thieving scumbags.

I also went to France a couple of years ago on Air France cheaper than sleazy and Lyan, so I beg to differ with a post above that says that low-cost are cheaper on the same route as the likes of AF / BA etc. Shop around, you'll be surprised.

I just flew to Glasgow for the weekend. Went BA, and it was an utter pleasure.

Used the online checking from work on the way out and I was through "airside" from the carpark in 10 mins. Also used the ba mobile online check-in site from my iPhone on the way back and printed boarding card at the airport. Through in 10 mins. I'm luck I don't have to used Stanstead or Luton I guess. £1 for a placcy bag? fk Off. Free sarnie and a beer and paper, big seat. Used the online to nab an aisle seat with an emergency exit so it was as big as Club Europe. Handy.

I was watching the chavs line up for their mistreatment by LyanAir and SleayJet and mine was only a few quid more, when I checked. Having saud that I would have still paid £20 more each way, I just think of all the money I "waste" on Friday night rounds and think its a false economy. wink

They made a mistake on my amendment when I wanted to go later to get some more time at Goodwood FoS in the morning on Fri, and they even could be persuaded to give me 5000 airmiles for the fact I could have not had a flight (it was rebooked on the wrong day) if I had not checked properly on the email that came thorugh a few days later. Sweet. I got to talk to a human on a decent phone number to sort it out too.

Girlfriends dad was booked on Ryan*** back in May - the online check in charges kicked in while he was in Spain.

Now...he is 73, is completely computer illiterate, and was stuck out in Spain with no means of printing out his boarding pass. Luckily the car hire company came to the rescue, meaning he could fly home. But it was a bit stressful until we got that sorted out.

I read this morning that O'Leary is trying to get Boeing to manufacture some sort of stool you can sit on with a lap belt so he can charge people to STAND on an aircraft?!! He also will be ordering his next planes with only one bog so he can cram yet more seating on to the plane.

And he is still crowing about charging people for a piss.

This is ridiculous. You would get the RSPCA on you if you tried to treat animals like this, but old smug-diddle-dee bks seems to get a kick out of this sort of rubbish.

Vote with your feet.

RyanAir are an odd firm.

The press and government seem to love them but actual punters with a good word to say about them seem few and far between.

Well, Susies dad went with them for one reason - cheap.

The online check in just doesn't work for him though - why should be impose on friends in Spain? The proper approach would be a choice - well, there is, but a non-online check in costs (I believe) £80.

FFS! The last flight we bought him cost less than that.

Ryanair are a terrible company, they couldn't give a toss about what the punters thank as they keep booking flights with them.

As long as they can continue to keep their wages and fuel costs right down they'll be able to offer the cheapest flights around and most people appear to book flights based on price.

I accept them for what they are - maverick organisation not subject to the usual laws of commerce and marketing as the rest of the world. didn't come on here to bleat about their non-exstent customer service and rip-off rates. I came on there to bleat that, even when they advertise a price structure, they are unable to keep to it.

Sadly most people to do everything based on price.

I fear the irreversible results of price loyal consumerism will be felt too late.
