Strictly speaking not bored at all, it just doesn't need anything doing to it. I have polished it to take out swirl marks and polished it to remove some minor scratches, but still got some to do yet.

Fitted a new bulk head bearing, steering doesn't chatter in my hands now. I said this about my last S, best £20 and an hours work ever.

Strange thing when it was bought new, the original invoice shows--

Basic price------------£14935.92
Car tax----------------£1329.29
Delivery/plates--------£304.35
Accessories------------£113.05
Fuel-------------------£8.70 (ha ha ha)

=================

£16691.31

Then VAT was added at 15% = £19195
Road Find License £100
Making a grand total of-----£19295 in November '89

So,if VAT is 15% then what is Car tax @ £1329.29 , seems new vehicles were taxed twice

Car tax was payable on the purchase price of all new cars, then you paid VAT on the total (so you paid VAT on the car tax). TBH I haven't bought a new car for years but I thought that was still the case.

Anyway, just goes to show that congenital daylight robbery is not the sole preserve of the current government.

I have bought a 3 new cars in the last few years and never seen it on any invoice. I have no doubt it is still done, just better hidden.

Can't remember how much fuel you would have got for £8.70 in '89, surely not a full tank! But maybe, does 80p-90p a gallon sound about right. Some distant memory is pushing that figure at me.

I think the "car tax" was one of the taxes removed in the early 90s when there was all the protestations about the higher cost of UK cars than those on the continent.

I would have been in Harrogate doing my work placement from college in '89 and can remember petrol was around the high 60's I think.
