Got a fab recommendation from Will & Jake for a builder... now we're looking for an Architect to speak to for a couple of extension ideas we've got...

I've never done any major work before so I'm presuming that a local Architect might be better.... would also like to start with someone who comes with an endorsement.... any suggestions/links?

Thanks..

I know this is going to sound dumb.... but do I need an Architect or a Surveyor or both?

I'm gonna project manage this just like Grand Designs. So it would be helpful to know.

I might do a blog too.

That'll be exciting for everyone.

For an extension you might get away with a space planner rather than an architect unless you're looking for something right posh.

Which being in the bosom of taste that is Surrey you probably will be, just to out do the neighbours.

You can use either a Surveyor or an Architect.

No problems. Sounds a good 'project'. I think the first discussion should be about different 'delivery' options to try to ensure you get what you want, in a reasonable time and at a reasonable cost.

We don't really know exactly what we want yet.

Other than causing maximum annoyance to Frenchie next door*.

  • Not true exactly - but we're looking for someone who can advise and add a touch of creativity and good ideas (in the right style) to the property.

If you want 'creativity and good ideas' (sic) you need an Architect not a surveyor.
Surveyors are not noted for such things, they tend to wear short sleeve shirts with a tie and drive diesel Audis. tongue out
Try the RIBA, they'll recommend someone appropriate, locally. http://www.architecture.com/

Best of luck with the project...

I thought it was the M&E types who wore ties with short sleeved shirts?

Thanks

I shall host a beauty parade and make my selection based upon ability to dress in appropriately stylish attire - including shoes and briefcase.

Shoes and briefcase are very important.

Yes I'm familiar with RIBA but would always prefer personal recommendation - as per Bob the Builder who I have lured away from Jake & Will with my superior buscuit and tea provision.

Don't forget to ignore all professional advice, and if things go wrong, just pretend you meant it to be like that anyway. thumbup

Ha ha ha... I might well do, we've got a friend who presents one of those TV shows & we're hopefully getting some contacts from her... wink

Maybe I'll do that. Yes I could be a star.... I could be all morose and sarcastic about all the contractors.

I could say "well, on Pistonheads, that well known building advice service... they told me to".... etc etc

MK1 - YHM - are you still about?

Bump - for experimental and/or creative Archtects in Surrey - we're jumping in now.

We need ideas - has anyone done a big design project - we want to almost double the size of the house?

I'm no architect but I do know quite a few trades people in the area if this is of any benefit to you.

Thanks - I might get in touch when we get to that stage.

At the moment we need to figure out what we can/ can't do to the house.
