I am beginning to wonder this in my 5th year of being completely shafted over my insurance premiums, as I seem to pay a considerable amount more than friends of a similar or younger age on similar cars.

I am wondering if the fact that I have a Polish surname is causing this, despite being classed as 'White British' and having lived here since birth (and not knowing a word of Polish), my name appears to be the only factor which could be bumping my premiums up, especially as my brother suffers the same problem (living at a different address).

I've been driving since 2003, one SP30 back in Jan this year and 3 years NCB, yet the only car I can get insured on for under £1k is my 1996 Civic VTi. I'd like to move on up to some proper sports cars but even a mk1 MX5 is coming in at nearly £1k. This is a pisstake really and I am seriously beginning to think that there is some kind of discrimination going on.

Does anyone know if the name would be a factor? There is really no other reason I can think of why my quotes are so consistently high. frown

Most likely postcode? They couldn't discriminate because of your name, and the computer that does the quote won't know you have a Polish name either so won't be able to discriminate even if it watned to!

Surely when you get online quotes they are automated and don't take surname into account? Just go to something like moneysupermarket.com and get quotes there - you could always enter a false name (but I can't imagine the computers are programmed to look for foreign names) just to get the quotes (but obviously don't go through with it).

I imagine your surname would only affect your quote if your surname is Bin-Laden. Other than that I don't think it would

No. Private Car quotes are computer generated, and name is not a rating factor. Post code, vehicle, claims history, occupation etc etc are, but not name.

Postcode is probably the biggest affect to your insurance cost

my brother is nearly 10 years younger than me & pays a similar amount to me due to living in a "better" postcode

Same here - there's been no crime in our village for three years, and even then the crime was nothing but a 'stray' football. Our insurance increased by something ridiculous moving from an average area and parking on the road to this area and garaging the beasts... rolleyes

yah they cant hit you for having a foriegn surname. There are postcode bands, they can be found through google, so check yours out.

Also, the civic is a pretty expensive car to insure for some reason, I tried to a while back and the quotes were crazy... Almost as much as an MX5...

Not surname ... Postcode probably.

Friends of mine have gotten quotes close to £2k in London and £700 for the same in Norwich.

The postcodes are low crime areas, and the people I compare quotes with all live in the same areas too, so I doubt that is a factor.

The Civic, despite being modified is actually fairly reasonable at £525 FC, but if say I wanted to change to an ITR, not an unreasonable choice given my age etc, they want nearly £1400. Heaven forbid anything should be adorned with a turbo, the prices are well over £2k!

Always puzzles me when I see 19 year olds driving scoobs and the like. Probably not insured at all I guess.

Getting quotes at the moment for a family member and entered an English name fir a price of £568. Changed to a polish name and got a price of £1215. One company BG wanted nearly five times as much, work that out. Obviously I am talking this as far as possible.

OK out of interest.... I just did this with insurance for my GT3, I kept everything the same, apart from change my name from Ian Pinder to Dominik Mackiewicz who is my polish friend, the price went from 815 with a block box to 1085 with a black box

or 975 without one to 1397

So it seems it does make a difference.

I can only suggest getting your name changed.
