fitting poly bushes - help required

I'm fitting poly bushes (purchased from TVRparts) to the front suspension of my S1. The top wishbone bushes push in as I expected and allow the wishbone to be fitted to the chassis but the lower ones are giving me a headache. One bush half(with steel insert) will sit correctly but the other half bush will not sit fully home - approx 2 - 3 mm to go, this stops the wishbone from being entered into the chassis bracket. I have also tried fitting both bush halves and then try to push the steel insert through but it will not go through both without distorting the second bush half.

Is there another way to do this?

The last time I fitted Poly bushes, not to a TVR though, I sat the bushes in boiling water for a few minutes to soften them a bit and then used some silicon grease on the steel insert before pusing it in. To get the insert all the way in I used a G cramp once it had started.

I used a bolt and large washer, and wound them together.

I was using a vice to squeeze the steel insert through but the second half of the bush keeps distorting and will not sit into the bush housing

from what you are describing it sounds as though the relative centres of both bushes are different and this is being picked up when you are trying to insert the steel insert.

You probably have a mis matched bush.

I would ring your supplier and exchange the bush.

If the top hats are the correct length (sometimes you need to machine to length) and the inset is the correct length (sometimes you need to machine to length) the only way you will bet distortion is if the top hat centres are mis matched and centres are off.

in theory the bushes are prob injection moulded and shouldn't be out but reality is often different top hats come from different moulds hence your problem.

I have just had the same problem, crush tube would not press home without moving/distorting the tophat. On dismantling I found that I had not removed all signs of paint from inside the edge of the lug. I had spray painted lower wishbone. Once cleaned up and lubed, crush tube pressed home OK. Problem was self inflicted and even a thin uneven layer of paint will distort a bush so that it binds.
