Is an M5 a better option ? or are they about to replace it, making it look dated?
MUCH better mate
The new 5 series isn't due until late 2010 with the M5 late 2011 I believe, so they are a good buy for a couple of years yet

The M3 will be as quick as your Pork, the M5 will be a LOT faster (in a straight line).
I went from a C4s to the M5 and have not looked back, an epic car with so much refinement you would think you are sat in your living room!

The current M3 saloon with a gear lever is the only car which could conceivably eek me out of the old E39 M5.
Super stealthy and a lot quicker than you might imagine/has been suggested.
I'd have one in Aventurine Silver, Model designation deletion (and remove the inscriptions/decals on the front wings; colour-code). Sort the brakes....AP Racing BBK and then fit 18" BBS RG-R wheels.Super stealthy and a lot quicker than you might imagine/has been suggested.

Just need to find one in a few years with the same stealthy colour scheme as my E39.
I have now had my M3 saloon for nearly two months and also have a 997s cab.
Have to say, I don't fancy the chances for a 997s against an M3 unless the road is seriously challenging. Engine is epic and just keeps revving - I am sure it would see off the 997s in a straight line with a bit to spare.
Personally I wanted a manual, so wouldn't consider the M5 and for me the M3 saloon pushes all the right buttons for a family car.

I would say that the E9* M3 offers a great blend of speed/power/practicality and with a more convenient size than the M5. When buying I considered both 5 and 6 M variants; whilst the V10 is a masterpiece the V8 offers similar thrills and I prefer the intimacy of a manual with the technology and soundtrack of the high revving V8. I don't believe that in most road situations an V10 powered M would disappear over the horizon the V8 sibling would keep them honest.
C63's have an appeal; but the auto thing was a no-no to me.
