GOLF 2.8 V6 4MOTION. What do you think?
Discussion
No! The reason? The Haldex diff for the 4wd system is set up more as a safety net on this Golf than as an aid to aid sporty driving as per the Mk4 R32. You can remap the Haldex's electronics using a product I've seen in Germany, but there are other issues too. The suspension, for example, is also set-up for comfort rather than handling, so there's lots of body roll, plus with all that weight you really need the extra horses of the R32's six for the Mk4 to feel quick. Save up for a Mk4 R32, it's a different car altogether, the V6 4Mo was always aimed at the pipe n slippers brigade.
What do you want the car for?
A 4-Motion is the consumate mini luxury barge, but don't expect thrills other than the noises coming from under the bonnet. The mk IV is a disapointing drive in every incarnation bar the R32.
However, the upside of this is that the GTI, V5 and V6 4-Motion are all dirt cheap beacause of their limited appeal.

If you're keen on a VW you've got enough cash for either a mint Mk3 16v or a decent Mk4 1.8T. Or maybe go for a SEAT Leon 20VT Cupra - better built than Golfs of the same period IMO, and better equipped (climate, six-speed with Electronic Differential Lock, six stack CD, electric windows etc). Just make sure all the door seals and boot seal aren't leaking and you've got a cracking car, chip it to 212bhp and off you go...
for £5k they make great sense, lovely silky smooth engine, quiet, comfy, very quick in a refined way, and for such a large engine economical on long runs.
I didnt realise how capable these were until I bought one (and I have an evo 8 FQ300 a the same time to compare it with), very under rated car, its not a super sporty golf but a great all rounder.
check the history to be sure its been serviced properly, avererage small garages not able to sort haldex issues so look for vw and specialsit stamps in the book.
plenty to choose from so shop around, your main options are whether you want 3 or 5 doors, cloth or leather, a 3 door with cloth will be cheapest...

I bought one for my wife last year. Love the feelgood factor of the interior, best interior of any small hatchback in my opinion, feels really high quality and a cut above the Mk5 and only the Mk6 is getting close.
The VR engine is wonderful, torquey, smooth, provides more than reasonable performance but with a level of sophistication that an I4 cannot hope to get close to, especially the baland but dull as ditchwater VAG I4. Economy is proving reasonable averaging 28-30mpg per tankful.
The things I did to the car I considered pretty much essential, the fitting of a Milltek exhaust to allow the engine to be heard properly and a Bilstein coilover kit with decent antiroll bars added as well. The handling as standard is safe, secure and wallowy as anything, with the Bilsteins on its been transformed. Also took a couple of hours with wet and dry and spray paint to transform the awful wooden trim into satin black. The previous car we had a V5 Bora does not begin to compare in terms of performance. Would have preferred an R32 but the costs are miles apart, for just over 4k I have a V6 engined Golf with 4 wheel drive, a lovely exhaust note and decently sorted suspension.
I paid £2800 last Nov for a one owner 5 door with full cream leather, full service history, 12 months tax and fresh MOT - not a lot to touch it for the money if you want a good quality, discreet and reasonably quick car.

They definitely are not a drivers car as standard even with the factory option sports supsension, they can be made to handle fairly decently though. I picked my wifes up for less than I could find a comparable spec / condition 1.8T - for me it was a no brainer, having had two 1.8T engined cars, Leon Cupra and Octavia VRs I couldn't face another car with such a dull engine, the VR is wonderful

I've got one at the moment, it's not bad, a good mile muncher on the motorway which was what I was looking for last time. As said before not really a sports car per say, but it does have a good turn of speed, 0-60 in about 7 seconds and the thing I like most is it's quite plain looking so it has a bit of the Q-car about it.
The V6 4-Mo is a lovely car but very much a 'cruiser'. Don't expect epic performance or handling, you'd be better off with a MkIV R32 which are probably similar money. I liked mine though - had it for about 18 months - and the interior was lovely. Sounded delicious too. Try before you buy, there are more exciting cars out there for the money IMO.
