Anyone else have an HP Photosmart 7960?

Just wondering what the situation is with the No. 59 cartridges. I've just printed off 100 10x15s and already the printer is telling me ink is low. I'm still using the sample carts I got for the other colours - surely I can't be using so much more grey ink?! Anyone know what's going on?

The bloke I spoke to at Jessops couldn't answer, so he's just very kindly returned me to the back of the queue so someone else gets my call!

Is that printer new?
If so, the default equipment of inkjets is only half full cartridges, so that you soon have to buy new ones. This is were the money is made (look at the prices for cartridges)

Yes, it's a new printer - but this is a new cartridge as well, not the sample. Used that up in minutes!

Actually, just checked and found that one of these carts will only do 125 copies.

Since I posted that message I've been queuing on the line at Jessops - hm. They need more staff!! But now I have to buy some more cartridges....

Cheers Bodo!

HP cartridges are so pricey I probably wouldn't get another HP printer. However, until my 970 blows up I've found Cartridge World (national franchise) quite good - the inks are almost as good and about 2/3 of the price. Plus they give £1 for any old cartridges you have, and will fill them right up. Service is good too.

Don't keep them too long though, as they dry out - best to get them as you need them.

I have an HP 5550 and a cartridge refill kit, it takes about two minutes to refill the colour cartridge with no mess at all. It works out to £1 per refill!

The TCO of colour inkjets is pretty high compared to colour lasers if you're doing a lot of colour printing.

Sian,

Are you sure its cartridge 59?

I'm looking on the Web for you and it says 56 (black) and 57 (tri colour)

Is 59 a high capacity version of 56 or something?

Thanks Greg!

It's definitely a 59 (grey). The 56 (black) is interchangeable with it, but apparently the 59 gives better results for photo printing. And is about a million times harder to come by, for some reason?!

Not to worry though. I've done the printing I needed to do - and I only used four 59s!! I'm just compiling a couple of photo albums for SBaby's grandparents, hence the sudden lunatic amounts of printing!

Hedders - how does refilling work, then? Where do you get the inks from?

Bloody hell.....you ain't wrong there gal. I looked at about 4 online stores I've used before and none of them stock it. There IS a grey photo one, but they say its a 57 (but I thought that was colour)

Refilling is good for one or two times then you risk seriously damaging your printer. Your choice. My father in law has done it since I bought him some Canon printer for about 30 quid a while back. New carts for it are about 20 quid a pop.

Excellent - thanks Greg! I'll bookmark this and get back to these people next time I need HP consumables. Got 3 HP printers, so it won't be long...

For the record, Jessops were no help at all.

FWIW, the 7960 is a brilliant photo printer, definitely recommended for small-scale printing!

I got mine here : www.inktecshop.co.uk/acatalog/HP_Refill_Kits___InkTec.html

They work in different ways for differents cartridges i think.
