This may well have been covered but for someone who has not been adbroad recently I was interested as to why:

Just booked some flights for the family hols to Majjooorka and website has asked me to fill in additional information before travelling, ie I have to give passport numbers etc for all of us, or 'we may not be allowed on the flight'!

Anyone know why or what this is, it feels a bit big brothery to me...

I believe its a Spain thing, not related to the airline. Its kind of Visa to enter the country, Spain insist on this information being sent in advance.

True, it's a Spanish immigration requirement.

It's the Advanced Passenger Information (API) requirements, been in place in Spain for a while, as others have said.

Coming to every form of travel you can think of in or out of the UK very soon, but in a much more 'Big Brother' way via the e-borders system to Planes, Ferries, The Chunnel, all ships and even leisure yachting. We will all have to give this info in advance before arrival and departure from the UK.

UK Border Agency Website said:
The e-Borders programme will collect and analyse information on all passengers and crew intending to travel to or from the United Kingdom, or in transit through the United Kingdom. All air, sea, and rail carriers will be required to collect this information. We will use it to assess the risks presented by people entering and leaving the United Kingdom, and identify those of interest to the authorities before they arrive in the United Kingdom or on an outbound journey.
UK Border Agency Website after a bit of hunting around also said:
Passengers who do not provide the information are unlikely to be allowed to travel.
Of course you can't find any proper timelines off the UK Nazi Border Agency website so you have to look elsewhere.

BA Website said:
Laws in force in the UK require British Airways to collect the following information from all passengers travelling to and from the USA, the United Arab Emirates, Thailand, South Africa, Caribbean, Kenya, Algeria, Bermuda, China, India, Malta, Mexico, Turkey, Spain, Angola, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Cyprus, Tanzania, Tunisia, Turks & Caicos, Uganda and Zambia prior to travel. The following routes will also apply from the dates shown:

Saudi Arabia - From 31 May 2009
Australia and Singapore - From 2 June 2009
France, Gibraltar, Kuwait and Mauritius - From 3 June 2009
Italy, Luxembourg and Netherlands - From 17 June 2009

Passport information, including:

* passport number
* country which issued passport
* passport expiry date
* given names (as they appear on the passport)
* last name
* gender
* date of birth
* nationality
