Hi, something i've often wondered is what countrys (that are at least a bit developed) could you scrimp and save ten ish grand, then just ship out for a few years, not working, not doing much, just living a nice life, without the locals hating you/being outcast for being a westerner, without being robbed, and generally living in a lovely warm climate!

I'm thinking this might be possible in thialand, some pacific islands, maybe in areas of south america, possibly in some of the nicer areas in africa?

I thought of Malaysia. If you don't eat out every night (probably a big attraction at first) then you could save a fortune if you eat local produce (so you better not enjoy Fosters, pork pies, apples, burgers, chips, etc).

Yep - Thailand, Cambodia must be a good bet.

India is dirt cheap. Maybe Goa? I believe there are western communities out there.

Think you'd have to look at the visa situation, tourist visa is max 3 month IIRC. Don't think I haven't thought the same thing, every time I visit Penang it gets harder to come home. Still, on the bright side, Sterling seems to be doing a bit better against the Ringgit! biggrin

hehe good point. Forgot about that side of things. Well, you get so used to people just turning up on Britain's doorstep and being paid to stay, you forget how other countries do things.

I suppose you could nip off to Thailand or Indonesia periodically similar to what folk do when they want to "refresh" their tourist visas for Thailand, but I'm sure they'd notice when you got on to first name terms with the folk on passport control. biggrin

A few years ago I made £3500 last me 6 months through oz and thailand. Came back when the money ran out but in that time I was out drinking etc most nights, had a motorbike/car on rental for a lot of it and of course ate out for every meal. It was probably a bit cheaper then (6 yrs ago) but I think 10 would last you a year in thailand easily and you'd have a great time.

I'd say Thailand would be a good start but I reckon there are cheaper countries in South East Asia to spend some time. A family friend spends plenty of time in Vietnam and Cambodia on a relative shoestring and loves the lifestyle!

Madagascar

Get a house build for about £2k, drive down in a 4x4 (preferably toyota), and get to teh south coast.

easily live for a couple of years on £10k i would have thought. There biggest note last time i went was £4.20 iirc and no one accepted it as it was too large.

South Pacific Islands aren't generally considered cheap, and you would have to consider visas and cost to get in and out of the country to revalidate etc.

Thailand have clamped down on the border crossing every 30 days, and I'm not so sure it's as cheap as people make out anymore, certainly if you want to do anything else but exist. Cambodia is still pretty lawless.

Are there any nice areas in Africa?

I reckon you could vanish into somwhere like where I spend 2 months in Tanzania. It was one of the campsites used by overland trips in a little village near Arusha. You could easily use local transport, eat local food and beer was damn cheap too! I'd be a bit wary of local police and their bribes unless I was with a mzungu who knew the locals very well smile

Living in SE Asia without a visa is getting more difficult. If you are over 55 and have 20 K pounds you can get a visa for malaysia, you could then travel around, max stay in Malysia is 3 months, crossing in and out of Thailand is not as easy as people say, you only get a visa renewal twice so 3 months then back to home country.
Cost wise you can get a room for 10 pound a day, and you can eat on 2 Us $ a day, I would not like to do either.
