2004 S4 4.2 V8 Cylinder numbering
Discussion
I thought number one was the right hand bank (the drivers side of the car one nearest the bumper)
If you cant be sure which cylinder it is, you can simply unplug, or remove, each coil (one at a time) in turn, when you unplug a good coil, the engine will sound significantly worse + more juddering. When you unplug a faulty coil there is no change in the engine note or smoothness, until you replace it then it will be fine.
I'm assuming the misfire is constant not intermittent to do this test.
