The search function can't help me at the moment but I know this has been covered before. How best to polish the standard black steering wheel of a Chimaera to achieve a shiny metal finish ? Alternatively , can anyone recommend a reasonably priced replacement that would fit the standard boss and horn push.

Mask off the leather using lots of layers of masking tape.
quite rough wet and dry initially, getting gradually finer and finer.

Alternatively, a dremel and tiny wire brushes, but its expensive because it eats the brushes at an alarming rate of knots.

Thanks for the advice. How many hours for the manual method would you say ?
If the easier process eats wire brushed - a long time I guess

I'd guess at a full day, can't honestly remember now Shropshire Lad.
Mine was a Momo Fighter which I'd tried and failed to repaint, so guessing my timings could be a complete red herring.
I was talking to someone recently who'd taken the paint off their Personal wheel and said it was a bit of a pig to do but very well worth it.

Go for it, do a bit of the back first if you're worried. Well worth it IMHO

I did both back and front last night - about 4 hours non stop . As you say , well worth it , maybe not perfect yet if you use a magnifying glass , but its back installed and I can always give it extra polishing sessions when the fancy takes me.
Very glad I took the plunge , looks particularly good against the stainless steel dash.
