On the Defense plays screen there are 4 small diagrams (left side) which show defence plays. You choose which you want to perform by selecting and pressing the green button on the controller?
My question is this:-
What does the coloured patterns (usually blue or yellow oval shapes) behind the small squares representing the defence line-up mean?
I cannot see any reference to them in the instruction book. When the ball is snapped by the offence and either thrown or passed to players in my area I end up frantically pressing different coloured buttons in an effort to intercept/maim/bring down the opposition.
Any armchair Quarterbacks with advice welcomed.

I haven't played 09, but I have played quite a few of the previous titles and I own 08. It sounds to me like you're describing the coverage areas of your defensive backs.
When the ball is snapped some of your guys will step back to these positions and cover them, if you're running that type of play. The circles show their 'sphere of influence' if you will, when a defender is in their territory, where they can intercept/get to quickly, etc.
I could of course be wrong, so if you can post a picture I'll have a look at it.

Your explanation sounds plausible. Why are the areas colour coded? I thought it might be to indicate what coloured button to press on the hand controller to prompt a defense player into action?
More often than not my players perform some seemingly random move/catch/dive and I cannot work out whether it's as a result of my manic button pressing or the game's AI kicking in.

The best way I've found to understand what the computer will do of its own accord is to pick a play and then let it run.
Just pick a quick game or practice session and pick random plays. Let the computer run them without touching any buttons. If you don't understand every last detail of the rules and tactics of american football then you can find out quite a bit through watching the computer play.
Failing that, you can always pump the 'Ask Madden' Button, pick a Tight End and try and sack the quaterback till you get the ball back.
