Would using regular (high quality) car wax and maybe plastic bath cleaning products be OK on a fibreglass boat?

Yes none abrasive. Also try using Starbrite hull cleaner first, all the yellow staining will disappear in front of yours eye just by wiping with a sponge (use gloves).
