Pricing out my options for the next couple of years motoring. So far it seems to be:

1. Keep my MX5, but probably SC it!
2. Sell the MX5 for an S2000 / Some other reliable convertible with more power.
3. Go boring and buy a BMW 330d / Volvo S60 D5.

Trying to work out the costs for each. Having a hard time doing so with the first option - can't seem to get a price anywhere for the work to be carried out. I had some prices from Phil at P5 once, but there were so many options with various bits that I got a bit confused and put off.

I don't want a powerhouse of an MX5, but another 40ish bhp would be most welcome.

Cost to change to an S2000 would be about £3500-£4000 and about the same for the boring choice.

So - for those who have had it done, what was the cost? Did you do it yourself or does it include labour?

Can I have a buy and have a supercharger installed for less than £3k all in?

And how much power would you be getting from an off-the-shelf SC kit?

I'm also thinking about the SC route too, next year. Will watch this space intently! :-)

I've never yet managed to get a simple answer along the lines of

"Give me your MX5 and I'll SC it for you to 170bhp for £x".

It has always been 'parts only' prices for various parts of the kits, with my enquiries as to the labour cost either falling upon deaf ears or "Depends on what you want done".

If your looking at going down the SC route give the guys at Powerstation a call... they did a cosworth Supercharge conversion on the latest spec MX-5, maybe worth looking into.

People don't tend to have them fitted by someone else, just do it yourself. If you really not happy doing it yourself budget less than 1 days labour by a competant mechanic.

I'm not sure an S2000 really adds much over an MX5. They are quicker and some people like the character of the VTEC, but it just feels like a progression of the same formula. Personally I'd supercharge the '5 or go for something like a TVR.

Keen to hear what people say about FI options. I reckon 180bhp or so would make an MX5 rather entertaining. smile

180bhp makes a 5 very fast indeed - 250bhp makes it blisteringly fast. I prefer 250bhp

Hopefully this doesn't break forum rules...

But I sell used SC kits from £995

I fit them for £245

Really you also need timing retard control - from £50.

You may need an uprated pump £95.

Bad news is they don't come up that often (I have one Mk1 1.6 one at the minute).

I can also supply new kits but only for slightly less tham Moss Europe.

However I will fit any SC kit - new or used whether I supplied it or not.

I just enjoy making the little buggers faster !

That looks reasonably easy... I reckon I could just about manage that... Gah.. Want!!

What sort of power would this kit give me?

Is this for the Jackson Racing MP45 Supercharger?

If so, please mail me when you get a Mk1 1.8 compatible one in stock smile

breaks open piggy bank and starts counting

Would I be right in thinking that if I had a 'charger fitted to my car, I could relatively easily remove it and sell it and all its ancillaries before I sold the car to recoup some of the cost?

Yes it takes about a day to remove it.

Excellent. How often do you get used M45s in?

Based on your prices above, fitting a used M45 should be <£1500 all in?

What would you charge for supplying and fitting a brand new kit?

Typically around 10 used kits a yr.

New kits are the same cost to fit and depending upon time constraints / exchange rates but I can always get them at less then Moss Europe list.

Best to PM / Email as this isn't a for sale thread.

Is an Eaton M45 supercharger an Eaton M45 supercharger? So to speak? What I mean is, do they differ for different cars?

For example, on Ebay there is an M45 taken off a Mini Cooper S - would that fit an MX5?
