I noticed in the small print i am not allowed to commute to work SDP only in my tiv.
Well ive been doing this on and off on sunny days for 3 years.
So i rang them to discuss......
A grey area with this company is best described.
If it's a sunny day and i have a prang no problem with insurance.
However if it's raining and i have a prang and i can't come up with a reasonable excuse as to why i am driving it and not my everday car insurance is void.
I tell you no lies that's the official line.
I came off the phone scratching my head.
I have'nt claimed yet for anything so i have no experience there god forbid.
If i do wish to use it everyday then the premium would be adjusted!
So if it's sunny on the way to work and raining on the way home.....catch the buslaugh

Don't think I'm willing to allow an insurance company to tell me I can't drive my car when I want to. I'd just pay the extra premium so I can drive when and where I want to.

I'm often tempted to take mine to work, as I wander all over some wonderful driving roads up here with my job, but just not worth the risk. Business insurance required, and not worth it for the odd occasion. Sod's law...that's when someone would run into the side of me. Cheaper to take a day off.

My hagerty policy allows me to use it for typical 3rd car stuff. So occasional sunny days to work or use if my other cars are off the road.

My policy says:

Is the vehicle used for daily back up/transportation , driven to work, school or used for any utility/off road use: YES - Very rare

Insure with a proper company like A Plan and business use is included as standard.

+1 We self-employed get used to it.

As I understand it, even if you drop the office post off on the way home that could be taken as business use if they wanted to be prissy so it's not worth the risk. A Plan gave me a good quote last year anyway.

So I don't have any problems I end up insuring the three cars and the bike all for business use. It's not a risk I am prepared to take, however petty the restrictions may seem.

When asked, mine said, it you stuff it in a ditch, in a foot of snow, 100m from your work we might ask questions but on sunny days its understandable you may want to use it on occasion.

Say you were to use it for work, (which obviously i never would) and someone hit you, would questions be asked then or would it only be if you were at fault?

I think I would like something in writing because knowing how insurance companies operate you know questions will be asked as they try everything to get out of paying up.

I'm sorry but that is a ridiculous statement from an insurance company. So whether you are covered or not depends on the weather and where you are? Unfortunately though it is typical of the insurance industry. They'll tell you anything you want to hear when taking out the policy but hide behind contractual terms when it comes to claims.

When I was looking for a policy on my tiv I asked specifically about cover for trips to work and so my policy has SDP and commuting (no additional cost but I had to specifically ask for it. Another common requirement is to declare any modifications but they don't specify what constitutes a modification. Changing the shocks and springs could be regarded as a modification. When taking the policy out they wouldn't make a note on my policy of the modifications to the car. As a result I feel obliged to tell them about any changes I make to the car in writing so I have proof I notified them.

Bottom line is if you plan to use the car for going to work or any work related activity get the proper cover, regardless of the nod and a wink from your insurance company. All this business about time of year, weather etc.. is ludicrous and I'd wager would be denied in the event of an accident. It's not worth it for a few quid and as I said earlier decent insurers include it anyway.

Business cover costs me £16 per annum extra.

You cannot get business use and limited mileage allowance on the same policy according to Peart.

in a TVR! You're brave!

Edited to add, don't forget business use and commuting to work are NOT the same thing insurance wise. On the latter, what the companies want to know is are you regularly on the road between, say, 8am-9am and 5pm-6pm
