I want to record engine and exhaust sounds for a video project I am working on. If I buy a microphone should I look for anything in particular? I don't have a lot of experience in this area hence the question.

Whatever you get make sure you record it 'side on' to the exhaust - not pointing at it.

Perhaps Interestingly . . . I've been videoing some sprinting/hillclimbing runs recently using a Sony HQ-1 bullet cam and a Chasecam solid state recorder (got it second hand off ebay and it's very good, great quality and when burned straight to DVD the footage is very good, good remote control interface too which I have hard wired into the car) . . . I keep it in a small foam lined peli case secured in the boot of the car so it's completely waterproof but I tried it out using only the built in recorder in the chasecam itself . . . and was quite surprised at the audio captured . . . this is a vid from the weekend

The interesting thing I thought was that the audio was not too bad and there is a total lack of wind noise, etc . . . it does distort a little but I am guessing the cheap on board mic is both cheap and on-board and that a better one would be much better . . . but that it works so well inside a peli case may be of use to someone . . .
