Am I wasting my time thinking about a Chimaera...

I'm 23..have been driving for 4 years...1 years NCB...

I have no points, no convictions, no accidents etc.

There's a possibility I might be able to keep the car locked away in a garage in Essex..

I'd like to insure it on limited milieage @ 5000miles.

Do I have a chance? or should I forget it for a few years...?

Ant.

You may have a chance with a classic policy, there are/were some that allowed 21 as a minimum age.
However, they may insist that the car is a second car.

Worth a few phone calls.

I got mine at 19, 2 years driving experience, on the drive, 10,000 mile limit.

The insurers (MSM) do like to see previous RWD experience though (for me it was a BMW 316i)

Like others have said, go for it! I got my cerb at 23. But make sure you can afford to run it properly. When I got it the only people that would insure where Adrian Flux and the premium got reduced for doing an advanced driving course.

Mine is £1500, but it's a modded 2005 Tamora with JP exhaust, Nitrons and SP12 wheels, so an older standard Chimaera should be a fair amount less! Dom

Insurance should be well under a grand. Try all specialist kitcar/classic car insurance policies. MSM, Hagerty, Adian Flux, Footman James, ect ect

Before having read reports from others like you who have done similar, I would have said forget it for a good few years.. but it seems its not as far fetched as I thought. The main achilles heel is having a job good enough to support the constant heavyweight spending you need to be prepared for to run one of these cars.

Join the TVRCC too.
Ins companies give a discount to owners who are club members. (any club seems to work with the relative car)

I was 22 when i got my cerb 24 now. Just remember its not the cost of purchase, its running costs which are expensive! My insurance is still high, but i would not change it for the world, best thing i ever did was buy a TVR, and the social side is great as well!

What are yearly running costs likely to be on average? I know some people get lucky, others very unlucky...

But if my intial outlay is about £15k for the car...

Any my insurance is 1k/year...

What might I expect to pay for servicing assuming LITTLE technical know how...

Furthermore, how much would you recommend keeping in a reserve account for the "unexpected"?

Hi, the Chims are a straightforward car so if you buy well your costs should not be high.

My V8S is, I suppose a similar type of car and my bills last year were about 1100 IIRC. This inculded a couple of unusal things such as new brake calipers and injectors. The previous year, the costs were about 500 (I can't do stuff myself).

My wedge stands me at about 450-500 for a year too, the Cerbie at about 1100.

Hope that helps a little.

Oh, I had my first at 19 so go for it!

Unfortunately Hagerty now only inusre TVRs if you're over 30. frown

Being 28 this year and driving TVRs and Lotus's sicne I was 21 I am a bit disappointed. Especially as they have hiked my policy by £100!
