E46 M3 - buying tips(again!)
Discussion
I know this one has probably been covered before, but I am looking for a 2002 - 2004 M3 coupe and was concerned about the engine reliability issues that the earlier models were prone to having. What was the recall situation with BMW and what model year was this finally cured. Also, what else should I be looking for during an inspection and road test. I am only interested in the manual version and am not particularly bothered about TV/Sat Nav.
I have read how important the first service is at 1200 miles.
Any help would be much appreciated and what price/mileage should I be looking at for around £14,000 - £16,000.
Thanks

Useful link .The con-rod work did include 2003 cars until Sept. My 03 car had the work carried out
at a service but not through a specific re-call notification. At the time I wanted a new engine, which the dealer was sympathetic to, but BMW not. The issue was the wear evident on the bearing shell surface and concern that new shells would not bed in with the crankshaft profile. Some engines were changed on this point but it was always a judgement call by BMW. To be fair the engine was OK after the work but was sold on within 5000mls so not sure long term. Buying a E46 now I would go for a 04 plate with led rear lights just to be safe.
