Im putting in a stud wall which needs good sound insulation. I was going to use 2 layers of plasterboard on each side of the wall and slab insulation between but my father-in-law says 8' x 4' sheets of MDF would be better for the walls.

I'm a bit concerned whether MDF would give adequate fire protection? I.e. would building control find it acceptable?

Is it going to be a fire wall? If not, that isn't an issue.

If you're after sound reduction then use two layers of plasterboard (or use one layer of ply under plasterboard, each side, if you ever want to be able to screw anything to the wall). Put some acoustic quilt in between the studs. Even some leftover Rockwool roof insulation will be adequate.
