Had a Boxer S today as the 996 was in for a service, what a great car, nippy, handled well and great brakes. I was really impressed and suprised by it, the build quality was also excellent, now the wife wants to swap her SLK for one

But would you swap your 996 for it?

I can get a LHD 996 for 33k, a LHD Boxster S for 28k.

Should I save the 5k and open up a hairdressing salon?

PS You and bennno will have to come to next PH meet - it was in South Oxfordshire, only 30 mins from Berks.

When (if?!) I get the insurance cash though this is going to be a serious proposition for me. I'm a big fan of dropping the roof, and a 996 cab doesn't seem to offer an awful lot more over the Boxster S, given that I don't need the rear seats.

Is the performance difference that noticable?

Tony, I'd get a Boxster S and save the money if it was me. But then I'd have 2 !!

In all seriousness, they are 2 totally different handling beasts. Obviously one's mid engined, the other's rear.

In the end you have the choice, mate. Lucky bugger !

Hmmm I'm thinking nearly new boxster S as opposed to 'high' miler 996 cab. Boxster is mid engined so weight distribution will be more familiiar to me coming from a mid engined car. Only thing I'm finding looking about is that most (new) boxster buyers have very little imagination when it comes to colour schemes, nearly all silver and black leather!

PH Classifieds have a choice of a black one, a red one and ....errr.... a black one

From personal experience, Silver with Boxster red leather looks fab.

If you're near Northants, or MK during the week, you're more than welcome to have a butcher's, Tony....

No worries Thom, and you can drop the E240 part if you have trouble bringing yourself to type it

If we all liked the same stuff God knows what we'd all be driving around in....and wouldn't it be boring ?

Greg

PS - you've got to admit though Thom - that CLK GT1 car that ErnestM took all the pictures of looked fabulous, didn't it ? I've heard they can fly too

It looks good but a bit dull for my taste: why bother keeping the star on the bonnet on a racing car? Or the back lights like satndards E-class saloon?

Anyway, I don't think I will ever understand the logic with Mercedes...nor will it prevent me from sleeping at night

About the 'flying affair', Merc are not the only ones who suufered from this: Porsche and their 1998 Le Mans winning GT1 had the same troubles two months before in Sebring, if I remember well

Nice offer greg, however I'm in surrey so its a bit of a trek, especially as I'm car-less at the moment
Should hear from the insurance people very soon. Looks like I should get a cheque which will at least mean I have to buy a new car rather than just talk about about it!!

Still I should get the loan of a fiesta 1.2 zetec next week (zoom!) so at least I'll be back on the road and off the (bloody awful) trains...

What did make me laugh is that Domster thinks that a Boxster is a hairdresser's car though. Well, I've never met a hairdresser with one.
Not that I know a lot of hairdressers.

Tongue was firmly in cheek with that one. I quite like the Boxster - don't like the rump much, though. Central exhaust looks a bit unassuming.

To be honest, I like my porsches in speed yellow or riviera blue, with big bi-plane spoilers and split rims. 965 Turbo 2 3.6 or 993 RS are the ones that really get me reaching for my stringback gloves.

Maybe Ruf could sort me something out on the Boxster front, starting with a twin turbo engine.

RUF 3400S. Now that's a Boxster I'd consider trading for...55K is steep though. Especially as I suspect residuals are worse than that of the standard car by quite a lot....

Welcome back Don !! How was the Z3 ? Bet you're glad to be in a proper sportscar again !!

Agreed. What do you get for your money ? Exclusivity ? Yes. An engine from a 993 and a set of seats and instrument dials from a 996. A front end off a 996. A second quicker to 60. About another 10mph at the top end. Thankfully the handling isn't adversely affected.

For me, I'm not sure the 3400 is worth the sum of its parts. I'd sooner have an S the way Porsche intended. And having recently driven both models, it would be an S every time.

Finally, if the rumour mill is true and the 2003 does have extra power (I'll be interested to see how - will they bore/stroke it or tinker with the induction ?), will it really be worth it ?

Jusy my two cents worth.

Hmmm, on that note anyone out there seen one s/h yet?
