What digital SLR?

Hi all,

I've always played around with compacts but now seems like a good time to upgrade to an SLR.

I'm looking for something sturdy with plenty of lens options and great picture quality at a decent price. I've put aside around £250 for this. Not much I know but all the spare pennies are going on the car just now.

Am I better off going for a used 8mp Canon D350 with all the toys or a new 6mp Nikon D40 or another option that hasn't been recommended to me yet?

Either Canon or Nikon will be fine. They have the greatest amount of new and second hand lenses.
