My 98 4L chimaera makes a constant high pitched whining/whirring noise. It is not audible once the revs get louder and blott it out but low down it is almost worrying. Is this normal? Is it just the exhaust/alternator or something or have I got a problem? Just had it serviced and the garage didnt report anything... any suggestions guys?

I suspect its the fuel pump. And quite normal.

Must say this would drive me nuts! I can obviously hear my fuel pump as I switch on the ignition but after it's presurised the system and I start the engine I never hear it. Rich...

Could be that the fuel pump is on it's way out. Mine went - started getting noisier so I replaced it before it let me down.
Get a garage to check the pipes/breathers/filters to make sure the pump isn't being made to work overtime, causing premature failure.

what sort of dosh are we talking for a new fuel pump? and yes, it is very annoying.

It could be, at an outside chance, a loosely connected air box. Mine whistled when it was brand new, and it was because it was sucking air in somewhere it shouldnt have been and it was literally whistling through a gap.

plotloss, did this make it 'whine'? the noise is somewhat akin to a sewing machine... not very butch as you can imagine!

Very difficult to explain a noise, but it was like the noise you would get on an unlubricated bearing, a very high pitched constant harmonic whine that was the same volume and pitch irrespective of engine speed.

Matt, did you fix it yourself or get a mechanic in?

As it was brand new, and after a couple of days doing it, it wouldnt start one morning. So it went back to HH on the back of an AA truck!
According to the Service Manager it was a 2 minute job but I didnt trust myself. If its mechanical and not a Mini I dont want to know!!

I have a similar problem except it's a high pitch whistling which varies with engine revs

Rocks, it feasibly could be the same thing. Apparently the box on mine was nigh on falling off so the gap was large which would explain the noise not going up, but if the gap is quite small then I imagine the note would go up as revs increased.
