Nikon D60 and lens kit
Discussion
I was kindly bought a Nikon D60 and lens kit for my birthday yesterday.
I have been keen to get a DLSR for a while now, before i unbox it and start playing I wondered whether I should consider using the money to another camera.
Do you have any help regarding the Nikon D60, is it good , bad, are their any limitations
Should I go for something else
Any help gratefully received
Cheers

Try finding anything 'not recommended'!GetCarter said:

thanks for the link.I was thinking of getting the new panasonic jobbie, but my gift of th D60 came first.
just wondering wether to stick with D60 or go for the panasonic dslr for another £120 or so with lens. The main reason I was thinking panasonic was simply that i have a pansonic tz5 and get on with it, I assumed some funtins might be similar there fore making it easier to use and switch between.
Help

The L10? I think you'd regret that decision if you're thinking of keeping and using the camera over a few years, and allowing for upgradability to suit what you might want to photograph in the future.
The only reason I'd take that D60 back is to swap it for a D90, your needs might be different though.

The D60 will do a fine job.
My sisters D40, with a reasonably decent lens can under some conditions easily equal my D300, the D60 as you will be aware is the next up the range from he D40.
Nikons are excellent cameras, and in time, if you add further lenses, you will get excellent results. The kits lenses can be excellent, the two I got with my D50 give very sharp pics.
These were taken with a D50 - and some were using the kit lens if I recall correctly. The majority had the Nikon 70-300 VR lens. I also used a SB800 flash.

I just looked at the G1 on dpreview and (apart from being 'highly recommended'!) it seem to me to be the top of the Panasonic tree. In other words, there's nowhere else to grow or develop - and the choice of lenses is so limited they're actually listed on the spec page.By contrast the D60 (or D5000), whilst roughly comparable with the G1, are close to the bottom of the Nikon range - meaning that while the Panasonic range will quickly run out of steam for you, the range of opportunities with Nikon (or Canon for that matter) stretches far into the future. That's why these two makes are taken more seriously. (The Sony range seems to be growing quite impressively though)
Control-wise, I know it's difficult to decide what you want until you'vre tried it, but consider those functions that you may need to change frequently - eg ISO, metering mode, AF mode, playback highlights/histogram (your list may vary) - are they all accessible easily?
