I'm trying to get a small amount of stationery printed. Last week I telephoned then visited a printers 5 miles away, the guy promised to call me back with prices.

I called him back on Tuesday because I need to get this done in a hurry and he hadn't managed to put a simple quotation together. I telephoned him again at yesterday lunchtime and he called me back from his home yesterday afternoon. As I was out at the time I couldn't take the prices down and said I would call in to finalise today. I went down there earlier and he'd left the prices at home.

After telling him where he could shove his prices I returned and telephoned another local printers and agreed to nip in and see the guy before 5pm today. I got there and he wasn't in. His lackey didn't have any samples.

Wasted afternoon and no stationery and there is supposed to be a bd recession.

Had the same thing earlier trying to get business cards done ( few different types). Of the three companies we've used in the past, one's gone bust and the other two have declined to quote. Bizarre!

I wanted 60 feet of quality garden fencing installing, and a big laurel hedge murdering, so I called the fencing place, said they'd be round within the hour to quote. That was four weeks ago, never heard from him yet.

Sounds like printers AND fencers are snowed under with work. hehe

Riiiiiight. My order isn't big enough. I lease cars for a living and earn more money on Maseratis than I do on Mazdas. Should i just not bother with smaller orders?

Thanks for the tip

No excuse for that in any business, if the job is to small they should simply say "sorry, it's not the kind of quantities we work with, try XYZ printers".

I phoned 8 printing companies today, as it happens, to get a quote for a monthly run of 10,000 80 page magazines.

Not one company had anyone available to quote me; not one called me back.

A recevier I spoke to recently said printers were going bust left, right and centre right now.

rolleyes Unbelievable isn't it!

Most printers have a response speed best described as 'steady'.

But then, why do we always need everything yesterday?

Ha ha, yep they are never the best at getting back to you. Always worth looking at going through a print broker. They take a commission from the printer and have always saved me a decent bit of money.

I have at least one 72 ish page mag printed each month with an 11,000 circ.

If you want the details of my fella just PM me.

Surely you may aswell just do it online? Plenty out there with good reputations, probably a lot cheaper and super quick too!
No wonder plenty are going bust with the prices online people are charging

Good advice. Popping into ANY random print shop with your order for say 1000 letterheads when their press is suitable for something completely different then they'll get back to you whenever as it'll be expensive.

Our own spend as a print partner means we can pass on discounts while making sure a client's brand is CORRECTLY applied to all their work whether labels, magazines, leaflets, and of course stationery.

We have printed for PH in the past, see links in my profile for contact details if anyone is stuck or fancies saving some £s.

If you want short run printing work done, then look for a small, back street printers to do the work! They will have considerably lower overheads, so lower prices and more often than not they'll be able to offer you a quick turnaround as well.
As you have found a lot of the bigger printers are just not interested in the small stuff anymore.
