In the beginning, there was Rocket 88 by Jackie Brenston and his Delta Kings. Recorded 50 years ago, it's widely considered the first ever rock 'n' roll song - an ode to an Oldsmobile.

I'm working on a project taking as its theme 'Cars and rock and roll'. We're talking REAL rock and roll here - from the Beach Boys and their Woody thru ZZ Top's rods and Lennon's psychedelic roller.

But I need help, so who better to turn to than the motherlode of knowledge we possess on PH give me more stuff? Great anecdotes would go down a treat!

C'mon everybody...

Are you trying to associate each car with a song ?

Not necessarily, it's more the stars and their relationships with their cars either personally or in their songs

Seem to remeber a (rather unsavoury) band called The Mac Lads, had a song which mentioned 'entertaining' you ladies in the back of a Vauxhall Viva.

Alexi Sayle once sang about the MKIII Cortina and if I remember correctly was less than impressed with the MKIV, I think the line went something like
"...It's a sort of box with lights on, it's a sort of box with lights on..."

Don't get me started on the Macc Lads. They are the best band in the World. (sort of)

The song that refers to Vauxhall Viva is "Beer, Sex, Chips 'n Gravy" from the "Beer & Sex & Chips 'n' Gravy" LP

quote:

Cleaned my teeth, put on my best clobber,
Tonight's the night I'm going to knob her
Vauxhall Viva's covered in rust,
But you can't shag/f**k a bird on a 29 bus

There CDs can be found in HMV or Virgin Megastores. I advise you all to buy at least one of them.

More information can be found at www.macclads.co.uk

Nick Mason and Eric Clapton race Ferraris for sure. I met them both when at my first job in the late 70's. Nick Mason was a director of the Ferrari garage where I worked. Eric Clapton used to turn up for the track days organised by the garage. Sadly the garage went out of business some time ago. I have ridden in and driven a number of Nick Mason's cars, notably a 250GTO and Le Mans 512 Spyder on a trackday at Goodwood. Stirling Moss drove me round in a 330GTS once, what a driver, he and others of his time (McNab for one) have my respect big time. It started raining on about lap 2 and the wipers did not work, did Stirling slow down? - No, he really knows where the track goes, a bit worrying for the first lap or so but after that - what a ride.

We're a little off topic here, but yes, they were er... unique(?)!

Saw them live once, during my formative, under age drinking years, and what an experience.

Back onto topic, am I mistaken, (this has been bugging me for a while) or have I seen the front-man of Faithless, wandering about various race circuit paddocks in drivers overalls?

In the mid 80's there was a singer in the US (later went on to front Van Halen) called Sammy Hagar, very attached to his car (song: Trans AM, with a lyrical reference to his custom plate IEATZ28). His anthem "I can't drive 55" became a cult classic with the pistonheads in the US of the day...

How about TRB's (Tom Robinson Band) Grey Cortina from 1978?

Wish I had a grey Cortina
Whiplash aerial, racing trim
Cortina owner - no one meaner
Wish that I could be like him

I think you might, he had a small slot in Clarksons Good Car/Bad Car feature in the Sunday Times - he sounds like a bit of a PetrolHead, he does like his cars.
