What TV show am I remembering?????

It was in the 70's.
It was set in the US.
The guy was tall and dark haired.
He solved mysteries somewhat like Jonathan Creek.
I think his dad was a cop.
He spoke to the camera from time to time to explain aspects of the story (I think)

I can vaguely remember it but cannot for the life of me remember the name.

Yes he did.
Towards the end, he used to discuss the case with the viewer and challenge you to solve it.
The rest??? You'll have to wait till I finish the time machine.
