I went up to Brockworth yesterday to see the fun and to see for myself how
steep the notorious Cooper's Hill is, and, blimey it really is extremely
steep. Rory McGrath put it very well but I'll save the rude word blocker
some effort.
When you see the people lining the hill on both sides you probably imagine
that they just walked up or down to get there, but it's not that simple,
and this was in good weather. What I had to do was walk up further to one
side in the woods hanging on to roots, branches, anything anchored down
really to get up there. When I reached my vantage point it was pretty hard
just to stay still by the side of the safety netting and at one point a
sort of "human avalanche" started when someone lost their balance. I was
absolutely dripping in sweat after clambering up there, legs shaking with
the lactic acid.
After every race there'd be a delay as the injured were strapped to spinal
boards and taken away by ambulance, those stranded further up the hill were
recovered by mountain search and rescue teams.
I reckon that Chris Anderson (twice winner of the official events yesterday)
was wearing a fair bit of body armour and who can blame him.
There had to have been at least 10,000 spectators there yesterday, the
nearby Shell garage had been cleaned out, the only drink you could still buy
was Ribena.
Six people required medical attention after fainting from just watching the
races, one person fell out of a tree but there were no reports this year of
anyone having been injured by a cheese, which is said to reach speeds of up
to 70mph.
The stewards line up at the bottom to rugby tackle any competitors who've
still got any speed up to prevent them hitting the metal crowd control
barriers and I saw one female racer take a shoulder to the midriff and
execute a perfect 270o flip. No doubt the ribs will heal in 3-4 months.
Great event, glad I went.

Are you allowed any aids?
If you are allowed body armour what about other things?
What about this as my body armour?
