Me and a couple of mates have come up with the idea of building a Locost car. Just wondering how much it costs, how difficult they are to build and what they're like basically.

Thanks

Edited to say: Is a Fireblade engine and gearbox worth £1,150, and how much power would that give me?

No, but these guys have : www.locostbuilders.co.uk/

Going rate for a decent 'blade engine and box seems to be around a grand.

Try Here too. Stig is actually a moderator on the ultima site. I've not checked his locost site, but the ultima build one (Here) is excellent.

Yup - several in fact and we still campaign 3 cars (me, my wife and my brother) in the 750MC Championship.

Complete build diary and coverage of my exploits at the links above.

Which reminds me, I'd better update those sites soon!!

Thanks for the links lads. Think the project is pretty much on, just need to find somewhere to store and build it. I think we're pretty much settled on a Fireblade engine as well, pending getting a final spec etc. Any further advice will be greatly appreaciated.

Not ideal I know, but I have bought a big van to store my forthcoming race car. I can then use the garage at home for maintenance etc, but store the car at a friendly secure car park, inside the van.

Also serves a dual purpose of getting to and from meetings - my daily driver isn't really suitable for towing

Well, the project has met with the expected parental disapproval and cries of "you'll never do it, you don't know the first thing about building a car." So I'm REALLY determined to build it now. It's finally been decided that it will be Fireblade powered, since 130bhp is more than enough, and the engine and 'box together only wiegh 55kg. So my next question is, has anyone here built a Fireblade powered car? We've got about 500 pages of stuff off various websites, but any further advice woill be greatly appreciated

do it you will have fun building it and even more fun thrashing round in it.
dont bother with a reverse box(they just cost money and fail at just the wrong time)in a car so light you can reverse by scooting(i sometimes just put my hand on the floor and push, flat surface only)if you intend to use it mostly on the road build an indipendant rear end chassis,if its for racing then the live axle tends to be lighter, dont skimp on the peddle box,buy a good one with full adjustment for bias and peddle position.
