Project S4c, save PH.1!
Discussion
As some of you may remember when i was 19 i bought Ted's S4C and drove it for 12 months, only to semi retire it later on. However i've now got a few spare buttons, and am planning to re-commision it.
She was dry stored and came out today looking like this:

and after a clean:

A new battery and she turned over 5 times before firing up and running as if she was driven in yesterday
Certain things require attention though:
the hood and rollover hoop are knackered, i'll need a new one, so any ideas?
The outriggers are totally shot, again cost and places to go for this?
the engine is really tappetty, i know its a push rod engine (granada V6 untouched?) so can they be shimmed?
TIA fellas,
Matt

I think the S4 has Hydraulic Tappets so they wont be shimmed, I would see how they sound once its been running a while they may just gummed up a bit and may clear once the oil has reached operating temperature a few times (or even once).

Not all of them have hydraulics - I adjusted one a week ago that was definitely not hydraulic.Edited by clarenceboddiger on Sunday 24th May 21:26
Neither of them have shims anyway.

I will need to speak to you about adjusting the hydraulic tappets - when we last spoke I believe you mentioned it was possible?Neither of them have shims anyway.

Will be nice to see Teds old car back out on the road. Looks like a front end respray might be needed with all those stone chips. That can wait though, hope to see it out on the road soon Matthew.
needs alot more than that!
outriggers are totally shot, im hoping to have them done in-situe, hood i've found a supplier for, and i have someone to do a rebuild of the old ford lump.
im expecting it to take about 12 months, as money will have to come in in dribbs and drabbs.

From memory the fault with rattly tappets always used to be inherant in the design. The rocker arms under the valve covers were adjusted by means of a pitch thread adjuster. IE No lock nuts as such but a threaded screw that was an interference fit in the rocker arm
I used to adjust tappets every couple of months because the bathing in oil used to always allow the adjusters to rattle slack needing adjustment.
I would think that unless some massive engineering changes were made to the engine that this arrangement would still be in place albeit augmented with hydraulic followers.
tappet adjustment was always a simple job 12 though inlet 14thou exhaust rings a bell for some reason but don't quote me.
