Would it work?

I'm after something a bit different for a location shoot. I have a tin of Roses, I'm sure they'll get emptied quickly enough. Wondering what kind of effect I'd get by punching a hole in either the tin or the lid and sticking a flashlight through

What effect are you hoping for? If you're trying to make a diffuser then putting a sheet of white paper, tissue or cloth in place of the lid will make it more effective. I've done a similar thing with an ice cream tub lined with tin foil and covered with kitchen roll for macro photography. A tin of Roses isn't going to make a very big diffuser for large subjects though.

Subject lighting mainly, for potraits. I'm thinking of lighting a background with another gel'd flash but need something fairly harsh upfront.

Curious to see what happens, I might give it a go if I get what I need in the bag beforehand.

Ah, if you want harsh lighting then what I just said will achieve exactly the opposite of what you want.
