I have asked this question on a Lotus BBS, and thanks to the great response, I thought I would try here.

I am gonna be in a position where I can move anywhere in the country and buy a house for approx 300k. I will be jobless for a while when I do so so can pick anywhere in the country (not abroad due to missus).

Where would you move to if you could go anywhere in the country, excluding the south, london, Home counties, Wales and Scotland.

Norwich is a firm favourite due the fact that it's a relatively quiet city and cheap house prices make it very tempting. So where are the other Bargain nice areas ?

Cheers,

Richard

Well, you could buy Newcastle or Bradford outright for 300k.

(although quite why you'd want to is another matter.)

I'd suggest Lancaster. It's a nice place with some brilliant driving roads, and you can hit up to the lakes within 20 mins, or down to Manchester within 40 mins. And 300k would go a long way there, oh and the people are nice too. Result.

I'd try Shropshire.

Lovely countryside and dirt cheap.

Better connections than Norfolk, too, although I quite like that area as well. Apart from all those carrot-crunchers. I once asked for directions to Snetterton and was told to go straight on at 'the circle' - transpired it was a roundabout...

I also confused a landlady at a pub when I asked for a double 'single malt whisky'. I settled for a Bells in the end, as she couldn't work out whether I wanted one measure or two.

All true - no offence to Norfolk folk (I have mates there, used to have girlfriend from there blah blah).

Why move from Hampshire? By far the nicest part of the country (IMNSHO ) - and one with below average Gatso deployment too!

If you move oop north, it becomes a real drag to take your car abroad, if you're into that sort of thing.. and let's face it (people won't like me saying this, but) anything above Oxford is a skegpit!

Although I live in the Derbyshire Peak district I would probably buy a place in South Devon with 300k. Truly lovely countryside, great roads, fine weather, nice people, deserted beaches when you want em,(if you know where to go,) good entertainment infrastructure, great places to go sailing and wind surfing, lots of good looking women, especially in summer when their ranks are swelled by thousands of nubile continental types looking to learn English.
Plus 300k would go a long way down there.

Depends what kind of house you are looking for. In Norwich a decent but not too large 2 bedroom flat starts at £250,000 up to around £350,000. If you want a country pad, £300K is a bit on the low side. Put it this way, my small Victorian middle-terrace townhouse, 3 bed in a village just outside Norwich has been valued at £200k.

But apart from the ever-rising house prices, Norwich is a great place to live and has just been voted the 8th best shopping city in the UK. But keep this quiet, as some people only make it to the out-skirts and meet the carrot-crunchers and turn back and never see the real Norfolk. What these people don't realise is that we put the crunchers there to keep out those pesky foreigners

Sadly true, having just come from a weekend in Newcastle and Sunderland I can confirm that the proportion of knuckle draggers per capita is huge.

But there is a Subaru dealership in Kendle, providing the perfect road going vehicle to weave your way in and out of the caravans in summer.

I have to admit though, I'm losing the will to enjoy my driving on the UK roads so perhaps a house in northern France would be an idea. Lots of small, cheap tracks and on the spot fines for speeding rather than points. So pass me an onion and a stripey shirt whilst waving au revoir to monsieur le Dibble.

Don't live in Oxford, by any chance, do you ?!!

I'm quite happy with my Northamptonshire skegpit.

If it's value for money your after, Yorkshire's your best bet.

Bank Managers up there can't even count up to £300k cause they've never seen that much dosh. For that money you'll get a 5 bed mansion with sweeping drive, Butler and Servants for ever, 2 football teams (Sheff. wednesday and Sheff United, although i use the word football in it's loosest terms) and they'll probably throw Scotland in too.

Beautiful Countryside and nice people (if i do say so myself)

Cheers

Not quite sure what you'll get for £300k, but York is a fine city...If you are after somewhere central then what about Warwick/Kenilworth/Leamington Spa?

As for this I'd suggest you've got it the wrong way around - depends what you are looking for of course, but having lived 'up north', in the midlands and now 'down south', I know which offers the best quality of life, best people, best roads, fewer speed cameras, better beer (at lower prices, even if the pubs do all close at 11pm) and will buy you a bigger house for your money. I'm only down here because I can earn 4 times as much down here as I can up there!

Love you for saying it Carzee - it means that the disinformation is working a treat - who would ever want to live in God's own country - Scotland for the uninitiated - when you can all be crammed into an ever more ghastly ghetto south of Oxford where driving in the country is just one long high street....... I have no idea...

I'm sorry - I know it's been a few years since I went to Newcastle and it's probably changed a bit since then, but I've never been to such a grey and depressing concrete cra^H^H^H city in my life - and I've *been* to Bradford!!!

How is it any worse than most cities? It will be improved beyond recognition within a few years anyway, and its certainly no worse than most cities I've been to, such as Huddersfield, Sheffield, Manchester, and of course, the biggest dump of them all - London.

Hmm.. you'll get little argument from me there.. I've lived in Manchester, Sheffield and London, and grew to dislike each one intensely. Of all of the above, I reckon Manchester is the best, but it's still a skegpit...

Guess I'm not into cities... I think it's all those people they have that does my head in in the end..
