4WDR; Four Wheel Drift Racing
Discussion
For Forza 2.
I would like to propose not necessarily a Championship (we'll see what the interest is), but primarily just a type of racing with regulations.
Sort of a "Friday Night Meet" type of thing.
Each person who wants to join chooses 1 4WD Car below a certain PI, Upgrades Power up to a point (as this can be capped in the Game Setup) and Suspension/Brakes/Clutch/Weight. Tires Width/Compound would not be allowed to be upgraded.
The idea being that with the increase in power but not grip there is the possibility that many corners will be taken quickest in a powerslide type fashion where the cars 4WD's traction will have to be utilised against the flow of the corner to claw the car around the track. Hopefully this would allow for a racing method which is both exciting to watch and participate in.
With this setup of Power>Tires hopefully online tunign setups will be redundant and people will be left to discover for themselves =)
Ideas welcome, Subject Adaptible.

It sounds like a good concept, but the problem with 4WD is that even if the TCS and Stability are locked 'off', they will still generally drive into corners with pretty good traction. My negative point would be that whats to stop anyone just driving into corners in the normal fashion and not hanging the back out, if you see what i mean?
I'm all up for trying different racing styles, as you said, it makes things more exciting and enjoyable, but i can't help but thinking that this would be difficult to manage if people weren't 4 wheel drifting every single corner, as if some were and others weren't, wouldn't it give some people an unfair advantage?
Hope that makes some kind of sense.

Having tried an R8 with differential set to 100% to the rear it did seem harder than the old school way but was thinking of converting the old VW GTi and seeing what it will handle likeI'm all up for trying different racing styles, as you said, it makes things more exciting and enjoyable, but i can't help but thinking that this would be difficult to manage if people weren't 4 wheel drifting every single corner, as if some were and others weren't, wouldn't it give some people an unfair advantage?

To Cypher: It's not a "Drift" race... It's a proper race. 1st ove rthe finish line wins.
The idea is to make Pushing round the corner unmanageable. Rolling would be doable but obviously... Slow. Occassionally the fastest route would be to chuck the car into a slide to get round the corner and keep the revs up.
I'm obviously a bit stumped as to how to make it hard to corner without sticking the back out now and then. Hence the idea of limiting grip and denying Aero Upgrades should mean that most cars will suffer substantial understeer forcing them to either slow right down to "drive" round, or thrash it round in a "risky slide".
It just gets a bit repetetive to find a snake of cars going round a track and the inside line = win.
With the "Racer" taking the inside optimal line round the corner i was hoping that now and then you might catch a "slider" trying to take them on the outside of a corner. if that makes sense?

Ah, sorry, totally see where you're coming from now. Upon reading the title, i thought the objective would be to continuously drift to the finish, and was wondering how that could be managed successfully, but now i see what you mean. The idea is to make Pushing round the corner unmanageable. Yes, that would be quite a challenge by limiting certain aspects and yeah it would make it pretty interesting to see which lines people start taking with limited grip and aerodynamics. I'd be interested in giving that a try, always up for a challenge!

What times around around?
might have to make it a 1 Car Type race so as to ensure enough understeer.
Got any ideas for Cars? Taking into account the upgraded power.
I think if its going to be as fair as possible, the same car option might not be a bad one. Car wise, the Audi RS4 with certain power and stability mods may be a good choice. Or possibly Skyline R34, or maybe Golf R32?might have to make it a 1 Car Type race so as to ensure enough understeer.

I think Saloons would be better.
The Audi would indeed be a good one, In fact i think then when doing the Audi championship in Career mode against the Silver Bullet, I found that power sliding around a corner worked better as the car handled like a porcelain bathtub on wheels to start of with. It practically floated around the track like an Oil Tanker.
I was thinking that prehaps stating that Brakes should not be upgraded would further encourage entering the corners at speed, making tight controlled cornering less desireable as the braking distance would be greater?

Yeah thats not a bad idea at all. Well, i for one would be the first to specify RS4's as the car of choice (mainly because i absolutely love the couple i have!). I agree, there does need to be a limit on what modifications are made, as quite a few can assist quite alot.
Brakes should be left as is i think. Weight could be taken down to basic reduction, but all the way might actually work as a disadvantage, as the RS4 tends to weigh quite alot which can actually be a benefit. The same goes with most other 4WD saloons. I think performance mods should be increased, but its hard to tell now which ones should and shouldn't be added.

Yeah, that sounds like a good base to start with.
I'm pretty sure you can supercharge the RS4 yes, and if so, that should take it nicely into S Class with a few other ignition and cam upgrades. I dont think there's any reason to go beyond S Class, as even with basic performance mods, that should have plenty of power.
Might also be worth upgrading to either Sport or Racing gearbox, as this could help a little more with power delivery, particularly in downshifting for tighter corners (i'm trying to think of ways to at least keep it on the track while you're hammering into corners sideways!). Might make it a bit easier to control with a slightly closer ratio box, so that you have decent amount of power to possibly get yourself out of trouble if the entry speed is a bit optimistic!

I was using that car for drifting last night at 850pp and about 350 hp with stock suspension and diffs but most other stuff on, it drifted surprisingly well but didn't have the power to maintain the drifts and the front just pulled it out again, I added more power and tunable diffs but it wasn't much better but it still needs setting up properly.I was think about this and it would really help if 2-4 guys could help me out with this.
A mixture of driving styles to ensure that the car is balanced.
However, the snag is that whoever helps would have to have an Audi RS4 with identical parts. Those parts might change during the experimentation so whoever is up for trying this out would have to foot the cost for the few extra parts. I'll put some hours in and try and buy all helpers an RS4, if you already have one then great!
Any takers? Preferably for tomorrow afternoon or Sunday afternoon as I'm at Llandow Circuit on Saturday.

I'm more than happy to help, being involved in this post from the start and i also have 2 separately tuned RS4s. The only downside is that I am in West Yorkshire for the entire weekend, returning on Monday and i'll be leaving tomorrow from Woking at around 1, which would be a bit of a problem in testing this over the weekend. If you wanted the help, would it be able to wait until Monday evening possibly, or perhaps Tuesday? I'm more than happy to help with testing this, as i have enough credits to add different upgrades and do some practising.
