Given all the reported issues with the Speed 6 engine, and the regular rebuild requirements, I was wondering if anyone knew what the highest recorded mileage is on a SP6? Be interesting to know number of rebuilds in that time....

...but also an idea of the comparable mileage if TVR based RV8 engines.

The factory had a 350i with a mega milage. Around 300,000 IIRC.

4.3 RV8, rebuild at 106,259 miles due to failed head gaskets (leaky rad & waterpump -> no coolant). Camshaft had two lobes that were nearly round, bearing shells and camshaft bearings fairly worn (but then again, the service history contained an advisory 'oil level found low'), fine otherwise; could probably have soldiered on for another 50K or so.

One 'minor' issue (top end or head gasket) IIRC at 40K and one rebuild at 100K. Not bad if you ask me.

Now that is bloody good going! I've seen a few Tuscans and 350s with over 30k on and no rebuild, also read about someone on here coming up to 50k with no real problems.

Mine is a 54 plate with 11500 miles and had a bottom end rebuild by Power beginning of this year at around 9500, caused by an incorrectly bitted bottom end bearing apparently. Top end was given a clean bill of health though!

Just had 108,000 mile service on 2004 T350t. Rebuilt by Power 2 years ago at 60k. Always scrupulously maintained by TVR centre/trimar in Barnet though not exactly mollycodled on road or track.

My 2001 Tuscan engine has done 47,500 since it was recalled to TVR in 2002. Don't know exactly what they did but I expect it was rebuilt. Oil pressure is great (22psi warm idle, about 60 at 2k rpm) and hasn't used a drop of oil in the 1000 miles I've had it.

However, with the roof off I can hear a tappy noise - my brother likened it to the noise an old VW Beetle (air cooled) used to make. It gets louder as the revs rise. Should I worry??

They're all a bit tappety, listen to someone elses to compare. When my Tuscan had its 'problems' it went from a bit tappety to machine gun fire (not in a gradual way).

Thanks shorts, I have it booked in for its 12k service at STR8Six in 3 weeks - I'd just like to know if I should prepare for bad news!

What gets my goat is people who go "ohhh the Speed 6 engine is crap it needs rebuilding" Yet you never here people saying the same thing about the RX7 engine which also needs frequent servicing and the occational rebuild. The difference is the TVR engine is a normal engine so in theroy anyone can do it. However the Rex is a Rotory engine so really has to go to a rotory specialist.

Hmm, maybe. But if you use your car(or broom) enough bits do need replacing, tyres, clutches, 100a fuses for instance (in the cars case). However there's a whole bunch of original stuff that's not been replaced and that's not just the glove box lid! I'm sure it's the same with your ZX7R, how many miles have you racked up on that lately?smile

My Sp6 is currently on about 53,500 and will be taking that to about 54k after my next couple of trips in about 2 weeks - no rebuilds but on its 3rd clutch (slave rather than plates wearing out).
