I'm clearly not going to get that lens that I wanted - we've just sold our house and are buying another so a lens is out (for now anyway).

However, I was at my friends over the weekend (he has a D40 with a 70-300 lens) and he had a polarizing filter - I noticed the effect on the clouds.

What I'd like to understand is - what is a Polarizing Filter, how does it work and is it worth it?

Look at the sky, put a pair of shades on, then look at the sky again. Same as a polarizer wink

Highly recommend you get one if you shoot landscapes. They are pretty good for shooting cars too, cuts out a lot of reflection.

One of the few filters that can't be replicated afterwards in Photoshop, so worth having especially for landscapes. Choose 'CP' for 'circular polariser' (as opposed to linear, which I believe confuse autofocus systems).

They generally increase saturation but at the expense of light transmission.

Yike - Jessops - £75!

Camerbox do have it for £25 but they're out of stock, but I found this on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hoya-52mm-Circular-Polariz...

I've lost the link, but I though I saw something about a CIR and COR Polarizing Filter - is there any difference (am I talking out of my bottom)?

As an additional point:

What's the difference here:

1.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hoya-52mm-Circular-Polaris...

2.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hoya-52mm-Circular-Polariz...

Apart from Price
The spelling of Polarising. HTH.

it looks like an amazon market place fkup, and is most likely the same product

Can anyone tell me if I'll see a differance between a Hoyo Pro 1 filter and a Hoya standard Circular Polarising filter? Is it worth the extra cash?

Many Thanks

I'm aware it's a topic discussed on here before, but I use a LINEAR polariser and have had NO problems with it. It's a Hoya which I bought off eBay for £7.50 (compared to it's £77 list price).

Depends what lens you are using it with. Assuming a kit lens then I'd say the extra money on the pro is wasted. Top spec L glass on a top end body and you might see the difference. But then your money is likely better spent on Lee gear!

I always take a polarised view on such matters or else you just end up going in circles
