My son is going on about going to Spain with some of his mates this summer, having never been to Spain, is it easy to buy drink underage? I don't mind him having the odd drink in this country or a few 'benders' now and then but am not so keen on the idea of a week long session with no adults.

I think you only need ID in the larger stores, but like here most smaller stores will be glad of the sale, so i expect it will be very easy to get wobbly every night

Very very easy indeed. I was 14 when I went to the far south of Spain on a language exchange, all of us were, some truly epic boozing-and-puking episodes ensued. Not me, I hasten to add. smile

Definitely more sensible to go down the educated-caution route than try to forbid or prevent it.

Sorry if this is me being dumb, but is he legally allowed to go to Spain without a guardian?

I would never of been allowed abroad at 15, are any adults at all going?

As for spain, I went aged 15 with a friends family so were only allowed 2 drinks a night so we went to the supermarket and bought peach shnapps ourselves and never got id'd!

Also in Alcudia aged ten I purchased a carton of 200 cigs as a gift to my nan back home!

I have told him it is dangerous - my best friend from school and university killed himself at the age of 48 after drinking too much for 20 years. Every now and then he does get 'trashed' at a friends party, but I know he is in a country they all know with people around, not in Spain. WE will have to see, thanks for the info though chaps.

I imagine it'd be pretty similar to Italy. I went with my mate and his parents to a caravan site (big static ones we didn't clog the roads), we drove over the Alps which was pretty fantastic... anyway my point.

We were 14 or 15 and they served us at the supermarket on site and even the bar they had on site. Happy hour was 2 for 1 on everything. We got very drunk!

I have to add, even though we did get very drunk we were still responsible with it. As long as he's sensible about what he's doing he should be fine, that's the way my parents always dealt with it, the whole do what you like as long as you don't kill yourself.

It is. Doesn't appear to be a problem, though, most bar staff seem to be good at keeping them to a couple of beers or kick them out if they look pissed. (assuming you aren't in a tourist are that specialises in pissed brits).

Just tell him to drink sensibly and he should be OK. Kids will always find a way of obtaining booze if they really want to whatever their age.
The Spanish cops tend to take a zero tolerance stance on drunken trouble making Brits/yobs and don't seem phased by doling out a beating for being drunk, disorderly, abusive or even disrepectful to them.

You can buy cans of beer from a vending machine in the street!

Now, about going away at 15...... you have got to be joking.

EDIT.

I need to add more.

At 15 he gets trashed now and then?!?! FFS!

There's some sensible advice here, encouraging sensible drinking, rather than banning it. Though I would be concerned about 6 15(ish) year olds going abroad without supervision eek.Chances are they'll be fine, but I bet Mrs Big Cheese can't sleep all week.
I did a rugby tour aged 11, we were ordering carafes of wine, the teachers were too busy gettin drunk with the 6th formers to notice.
We also bought fireworks & set them off on the beach, and in the hotel yard. frown
This was many years ago.
