Considering an e46 m3 for my next car having recently sold my 993 tip , which had it been a manual i may have kept .

Would i feel the same with the SMG or is it a much more advanced system , i am no boy racer or track day'er but like too feel in control .

Have done search's and read abit about SMG , has anyone on here used the tip and smg box ?

Thanks Steve

Having previously owned a manual M3, I wanted to try a SMG so bought a 52 plate and love it.

Was out the other day having a bit of fun with 2 F360's which both had paddleshift and the M3 was pushing them along, having the paddleshift made it so easy to concentrate on the road.

My BMW marketing material states the BMW M3 SMG II gearbox is twice as fast when compared with Ferrari 360 F1 with quickest shift-time of 80 milliseconds vs. their quickest shift-time of 150 milliseconds.

Unlike the BMW the Ferrari will also upshift automatically regardless of driver input.

Tiptronic: good for parking on hills, won't roll back, silky smooth, 5 gears, some difference in fuel consumption vs manual, pretty much effortless

SMG II: very fast shifts if you're really going for it, will roll back on hill (clutch disc still there), very very nice throttle rev-matching on downshifts, 6 gears, good for fuel consumption vs manual (difference is so minimal, you can ignore it), requires some changes in driving to drive SMG equipped car smoothly

993 was 4 speed , hence not always being in the gear you wanted it to be , because there just wasn't enough .

I see... I was kinda rekindling my 996 tiptronic experience

But the SMG II will never shift up (even if you hit the redline) in sequential mode

It will shift down though to reduce engine load.

Whats the difference between smg and smg2? When did smg2 take over smg?

SMG I is a BMW E36 M3 option

SMG II is a BMW E46 M3 option (more modes, meant to be much less jerky than SMG I)

Not sure about years of availability

There is a hill assist on the E46 smg cars, pull the left paddle and hold it and it'll hold the car for a second. Or something along those lines, probably says in the manual.

it will make the revs rise a little, you still need your foot on the brake pedal, it just holds it for 2 secs, giving you enough time to swap your foot over to the other pedal
