Anyone have any news or views on electric water pumps. Considering one for the pace car (a few more bhp always welcome) but have heard that they are possibly not as reliable on a daily driven car (25000 miles per year) as the stock one

I looked at the Mezier one for the C4 last year, but concluded it wasn't worth it. I have heard that for a racing/drag car they are good, but not sure about 25,000 miles?

I've just had a look at the new Demon Tweeks catalogue and see that the Davies Craig one they're offering has a design life of 2,000 hours. At an average speed of 45 mph (that's the average shown on my DIC) 25,000 miles equates to about 550 hours of operation. So pump life should be about 3-4 years.

The advertising blurb says that the Prodrive Ferraris used 2 of these pumps in their cooling system.

Best ones I've seen are by these people:

When I get round to it I'm using their product and binning the ls1 water pump casting, its a tad large and heavy!

Copied from my post on the Engines section, relating to my rover v8 engine when I used the Davies Craig pump, as I couldnt be bothered typing it all again.

I have used this pump, but after some time I reverted back to the mechanical pump. I could see no benefit in coolng ( worse id say ), it required alteration of the pipework, due to the water being pumped from a different location, making the heater not work properly. Using the supplied controller the water temp would cycle up and down quite a bit. With the pump running flat out all teh time, it still struggled to keep things cool. While that is partly due to my rad not being big enough, the mechanical was better.
The pump itself is rated at something like 2000hrs, which isnt a lot. Its also made of plastic, looks cheap, and generally, IMO crap.
Another issue I had, was that the removal of the water pump pulley, and running the alternator only off the crank, caused the belt to wrap around the alternator pulley for almost 180deg.
The belt didnt seem to like this tight bend too much, and cause the belt to turn on numerous occasions, causing it to jump off, and rendering the belt scrap. I did add an idler pulley to sort this, but generally it isnt worth the hassle.
Id stick with the mechanical pump over the DC anyday.

I also draw your attention to this article.

Here is another pump manufacturer I found, that looks more impressive. I have never used it, or seen it in real life though, but from spec, it is far superior in every way to the DC pump.

Autospeed also did a review of the davies craig pump a few years ago. When they showed the results to DC, they were unable to publish them due to legal threats from Davies Craig.
