I thought that the standard switch (at least on s1/2) clamped into the top steel water pipe

Mine (S3) and others Ive seen screw into a boss on the steel pipe from the swirl tank to the radiator. Its hard to say if this is the same as mine rolleyes

Different connector to mine. The switch in mine is a generic 22mm one (can't remember the temperature) with spade connectors.

DOn't think it screws in - I think it pushes in and is held with a little plate.

DOn't think it screws in - I think it pushes in and is held with a little plate.
Mine definitely screws in although I have seen plenty with the push in arrangement...
